The Nanny Diaries: Why They’re So Important on General Hospital

All this talk about Esme Prince’s mysterious nanny on General Hospital has reminded us that childcare is an incredibly important position in Port Charles. We don’t mean just because those hardworking women are always “upstairs” with the kids, so the little rugrats don’t interrupt important, soapy conversations. But because they connect characters in unusual and meaningful ways.

General Hospital Introduction

Back in the early 1980s, when Holly Sutton (Emma Samms) first showed up on General Hospital, her beloved childhood nanny was a source of strength for her in dealing with her con-artist family and in helping Holly to reunite with Luke Spencer (Anthony Geary).

Then, when Holly was happily married to Robert Scorpio (Tristan Rogers), who should show up on their doorstep but Anna Devane (Finola Hughes)? Anna was Robert’s ex-wife…but Holly didn’t know that. Instead, Holly and Anna bonded over…their shared childhood nanny! What are the odds?

GH: Middle Ground

But, wait, there’s more! Said childhood nanny also turned out to be the mother of one Cesar Faison (Andres Hove)! What are the odds? Probably even lower than they were of Robert marrying two women of roughly the same age who somehow still managed to share a childhood nanny?

We have to wonder, did Faison become obsessed with Anna as a toddler? If so, that’s even creepier than the rest of his obsession. His mother may have been a terrific nanny, but maybe her parenting could use a little work.

General Hospital: Next Generation

And now we have Esme’s nanny…mystery figure and keeper of secrets. Does she also have a supervillain of a son? Does she know more about Esme’s past than Esme does?

We are certainly hoping it’s the latter. We’d love to learn more about Esme. And about Ryan Chamberlin (Jon Lindstrom). And if the truth is in this nanny’s diaries…we are here for it!
