Michael Easton recently reminded viewers why ABC Daytime’s slogan was Love in the Afternoon for many years. Easton’s Dr. Hamilton Finn pulled out all the romantic leading man stops when he met with nurse Elizabeth Webber as the couple settled their feelings. For his performance as Liz’s love, Soap Hub bestows Performer of the Week for GH honors on Easton.
A recent GH episode allowed Easton to play with two of the most important people in Finn’s life outside of his daughter Violet Finn (Jophielle Love) — his brother Harrison Chase (Josh Swickard) and his love Elizbeth Webber (Rebecca Herbst). First, Finn was visited in his office by his upbeat brother. Finn and Chase know for sure that they’re siblings and not father and son but there’s still occasional awkwardness between the two men.
And how could there not be? They’re the soap opera version of the Warner Bros. Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies characters Spike, the grim-faced Bulldog, and Chester, the eager-to-please Terrier. (We’ll let you decide who’s who…kidding.) Chase bounces into Finn’s office with boundless energy (cuz he and Finn are pals!) Despite being night and day in personalities, Finn and Chase bonded over their mutual relationship problems. It’s entertaining to see Finn endearingly endure Chase’s, at times, enlightening optimism.
Later, Michael Easton shined as Finn professed his commitment to Elizabeth. The good doctor’s a man of few words but he practically went on a talking jag — that’s because Liz is very important to him. He made that clear to her in no uncertain terms. “Whatever we are, whatever we become, I want to be there for you because I think we’re stronger when we’re together,” Finn said as he looked Liz right in the eyes. “I know I am…I need you to know, you’re not alone anymore.” Swoon!
Who wouldn’t want to hear that from someone? Next, Finn did something that was very uncharacteristic. He continued to talk. “There are probably times you’re going to be on your own, but not necessarily alone,” Finn overexplained.
“Finn?” Elizabeth interrupted. “Kiss me.” Michael Easton’s Finn didn’t miss a beat by responding, “Okay.” Post-kiss, Finn was concerned about Elizabeth’s sons — Cameron, Jake, and Aiden — accepting him. “How could they not…?” Liz warmly replied. “They’ll see what a good man you are and how happy you make me.”
“That’s the plan,” Finn replied. “Whatever happens from here, we face it together.” Of course, Michael Easton didn’t act these scenes alone so, we’re giving a truly well-deserved honorable mention to his co-star and leading lady Rebecca Herbst, who brings an understated realism to her role as a widow, a mother, a nurse, and a woman ready to take a chance on love again.
