Soap Hub Performer Of The Week For GH: Brook Kerr

Soaps are all about secrets and Portia Robinson, played by Brook Kerr, sat on a big one for years on General Hospital. She lied about daughter Trina’s paternity, keeping the possibility from Curtis that he might be a father. However, due in no small part to Kerr’s heartfelt portrayal of her good doctor character, we find ourselves rooting and caring for Portia.

Brook Kerr – Performer of the Week

Last week, Portia ran into her husband Curtis (Donnell Turner) outside of Kelly’s and while he wanted to keep their chance encounter brief, she wanted to have a chat with her estranged groom. While other brides might be busy on their honeymoon or writing thank you notes for gifts, Portia had something far more important on her mind. She’s trying to salvage her marriage and her relationship with Curtis.

“Don’t you think that we should try to work things out together?” Portia genuinely inquired with Curtis. “I am so sorry that I hid the truth from you but I’m not just really sure that distance is the answer here. Maybe we could try counseling?”

Curtis said he’s not ready to walk into a therapist’s office just yet prompting Portia to tell him she’s willing to wait and she wants to fight for their marriage. “Is there hope for us, Curtis?” asked Portia (Brook Kerr), who is clearly wearing her heart on her sleeve. “Just tell me our love for one another is strong enough to get us through this.”

It’d be easy to dislike Portia for her lies however, Kerr brings such vulnerability and likability to her character that we can’t help but root for her. Very few — if any of us — make it through life without having a regret or two. Portia made a tough decision after Trina (Tabyana Ali) was conceived. She did what she thought was best for everyone at the time. Kerr conveys both Portia’s regret and her longing to move forward with her life.

Curtis stated that he’s not sure that the love he and Portia feel for one another can repair the broken trust. “It can,” Portia softly but passionately responded. “If you just give it a chance. If you just remember what we mean to each other.”

A teary Portia attempted to catch her breath and compose herself after Curtis walked away from her and Kelly’s — if not necessarily out of her life. Alas, Curtis and Jordan’s (Tanisha Harper) subsequent near kiss at Charlie’s Pub likely means more heartache for Portia.

Brook Kerr wowed us with her performances last month at Portia and Curtis’s wedding when the bride’s secrets fully came to light. The actress continues to shine as this story develops. We look forward to more vulnerable performances from Kerr — especially when (if?) GH reveals whether Trina’s dad is either Curtis or Marcus Tagger (Real Andrews).
