History repeats itself in the real world and on General Hospital. Some characters are chips off the old block, like Carly Spencer and Josslyn Jacks. Some are polar opposites, like Sonny Corinthos and Dante Falconeri. Blood sometimes comes into play, in that Maxie Jones is a lot like Felicia Jones. But, blood doesn’t always tell – look at how different Cody Bell is from Mac Scorpio. However, where it gets interesting is when two characters who aren’t related at all appear to be following similar paths. To whit: Esme Prince and Nina Reeves.
To start with, both Nina (Cynthia Watros) and Esme (Avery Kristen Pohl) were dealt a poor hand in the genetic lottery of life. Nina was the daughter of homicidal Madeline (Donna Mills), and the niece of (now reformed) supervillain Liesl (Kathleen Gati). Esme got a double whammy, being the daughter of two psychos, Heather (Alley Mills) and Ryan (Jon Lindstrom).
Nina was put into a coma for 20 years — by her own mother. Esme lost her adoptive parents and fell under Ryan’s evil influence. Neither situation was conducive to going from a barely developed teenager to a fully functioning — and functional — adult. Both failed the challenge.
What really broke Nina was coming out of the coma and learning that she’d lost her baby. This led her to the little crime of drugging Ava (Maura West), cutting her open, and stealing baby Avery. Then losing the daughter she never got the chance to know, Nelle (Chloe Lanier), prompting Nina to keep the truth about Sonny (Maurice Benard) being alive from Carly (Laura Wright). Finally, knowing that Carly kept Nina from her other daughter, Willow (Katelyn MacMullen), is what led Nina to siccing the SEC on Carly and Drew (Cameron Mathison).
Avery had already done some horrible things. But then a combination of amnesia and giving birth to beloved son, Ace, mellowed her considerably. Except then Esme got her memory back. Now that it looks like Spencer (Nicholas Alexander Chavez) has handed Ace over to Nikolas (Adam Huss), could the loss of her son drive Esme to Nina’s levels of crazy vengeance? Any pregnant women in Port Charles — Kristina (Kate Mansi)? – had best duck and cover.
