Sonny Corinthos isn’t quite the same after his Port Charles return on General Hospital. As much as he’s trying to get back to his kingpin ways, it seems like there’s a piece of his heart still in Nixon Falls. How much of his heart, exactly?
General Hospital: Sonny’s Heart Has Grown
Sonny (Maurice Benard) was a sight for sore eyes for many characters. Everyone (okay, not EVERYONE) was happy to see him. Most of all Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) and Carly Corinthos (Laura Wright). Sure, he interrupted their wedding night and the possibility of truly falling in love but they’d both rather have Sonny than each other (sure).
GH: A Confusing Time
It didn’t take long for General Hospital’s Carly to realize her husband was not the same man who fell off the bridge, though. The Sonny who hit the water that day was ruthless and powerful and could hold a grudge for years.
The Sonny of today seems kinder, sweeter, more forgiving, wears cowboy hats (or at least doesn’t throw it away), and is letting some pretty major things slide. She’s not wrong. He isn’t exactly taking care of business — at least not the way she expects.
Just look at the way Sonny is handling Ava Jerome Cassadine (Maura West). Giving her joint custody is certainly not like him at all. He’s spent years trying to pry Avery away from her. Sure, yes, Avery needs her mother and Ava needs her daughter but when has that ever mattered to Sonny?

Never mind Ava, just look at the way he’s dealing with Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros) and her lies. Nina helped keep Sonny from his family for almost a year and the fact she’s not swimming with the fishes isn’t very #mobboss of the Corinthos family’s fearless leader. Where is his head at?
Can Sonny really have it all and be a tough guy with a heart of gold? General Hospital has always shown that his Sonny side wants to be hard and rough but that part of him that’ll always be “Mike” sees the good in people (and himself) and it’s clear he doesn’t want to let that go. And Nina is a reminder of that — she’s the one who sees him that way and that will always mean something to him.
GH: What’s Next?
What does this mean for Sonny’s future? Will he finally find a balance? Will he give up his mobster ways and become a true family man?
