A Critic’s Review Of General Hospital: Bittersweet Nostalgia & Endgames

When it comes to General Hospital, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days, we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of the GH week that was.

General Hospital: A Critic’s Personal Highlight

I have to say the most recent General Hospital offerings were a little bit like old home week, what with the comforting revelation that Robert Scorpio (Tristan Rogers) and Holly Sutton (Emma Samms) had indeed pulled the wool over quite a few eyeballs — with an assist from caper princess Felicia Scorpio (Kristina Wagner) no less! — and Holly disappearing into the fog like many a classic daytime character before her.

And much kudos to the special effects department for that spectacular explosion and to that fire-engulfed stuntperson. Job very well done!

With that said, you know I have to ask: now what? Will Ethan Lovett (Nathan Parsons) be saved? Will we ever find out what Victor Cassadine (Charles Shaughnessy) planned to do with those cuttings from the Ice Princess? Will we ever learn what forces are amassing against the Cassadine family?

Bigger and most important question — will Samms/Holly ever again grace our screens and reunite with Rogers/Scorpio? I know many of you out there wouldn’t mind seeing a Robert/Diane Miller (Carolyn Hennesy) pairing — and I’m very much aware of a small, albeit vocal minority who still yearn to see Robert with Anna Devane (Finola Hughes) — but Robert and Holly are the endgame as far as I’m concerned and any other coupling with either party is merely a placeholder.

Keeping with my running theme of General Hospital nostalgia, I’d be remiss if I didn’t admit that the annual Thanksgiving Day disaster at Monica Quartermaine’s (Leslie Charleson) abode — Alan Q gave her the house, don’t you know — tickled me to no end, even if the sight of Carly Corinthos (Laura Wright) mixing it up with the assemblage did make me want to vomit. (I’m sorry, I’m sorry, but after what Carly did to AJ Quartermaine, I’ll never find it appropriate for her to be on the grounds of the estate let alone inside the manse.)

Further GH Musings

* Having raked Carly across the coals above, I feel compelled to give her her due and say that I was impressed by her handling of Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros) in the aftermath of the two tending to Willow Tait (Katelyn MacMullen). Even Michael Corinthos (Chad Duell) gets brownie points for confessing that he was sure Nina wouldn’t have gone out of her way to pick a fight with Willow if she knew she was battling cancer.

Willow, I’m not so impressed with. First and foremost, I can’t understand the position that she’s taken. What I’m gathering is that she’d rather die — and take her baby with her — than admit out loud to anyone that she has cancer…that doesn’t make much sense to me. Anybody else? Do I have the wrong end of the stick?

What do you think? Post a comment!

Second, we’ve got to talk about that fit she threw with Nina. Despite the consensus in the comments, I’m not “Team Nina” and Nina is most decidedly not my favorite character. In point of fact, I haven’t been a fan of Nina’s since the character was recast and rehabbed — or deconstructed depending on how you look at it — from a mentally unsound anti-heroine to…whatever Watros has been forced to play.

I say all this to point out that Willow was very much, and I do mean VERY MUCH in the wrong when she lambasted and blasted Nina. If there was anybody who needed to shut their mouth it was Willow.

The sad thing is all this was done in service of the all-mighty plot. Nina and Willow HAVE to be at odds with one another so that when the truth about their connection comes out, the dramatic stakes will be at their zenith…or so Chris and Dan/Dan and Chris hope.

* Heather Webber (Alley Mills) and Ryan Chamberlin (Jon Lindstrom) know one another? Curiouser and curiouser…

* Just what does General Hospital have against ChaLynn? More to the point, what does it have against Brook Lynn and/or her portrayer Amanda Setton? There has to be a reason they’re out to make BLQ so darn unlikeable.

* So, is Pikeman Security Group the west coast based big bad that’s been teased in drips and drabs since January of this year, or yet another plot point being introduced by General Hospital’s head honchos before the previous one has been wrapped? Come to think of it, has any plot point introduced since January of this year been brought to a satisfactory conclusion? Nope, can’t think of a one.

Speaking of never-ending stories, are we to infer that GH now intends to reveal that Marshall (Robert Gossett) isn’t Curtis Ashford’s (Donnell Turner) biological father because…well, I’m all kinds of confused as to where that whole thing is going.
