Ruth Bader Ginsburg has died from complications from pancreatic cancer. She was 87. Numerous news outlets are reporting that the Supreme Court Justice passed away today, surrounded by family at her home in Washington, D.C.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg Passed Away

Nominated by President Bill Clinton in 1993, the Brooklyn-born Ginsburg became the second of four female justices to be confirmed to the Court. Others include Sandra Day O’Connor, Sonia Sotomayor, and Elena Kagan — the latter two are still serving on the court.

Known for her liberal views, Ginsburg was born in 1933 in Brooklyn, New York. She lost both her older sister and her mother before she graduated from high school.

A graduate of Cornell University, she became a wife and mother and then attended law school at Harvard. She was a professor at both Rutgers Law School and Columbia Law School.

She championed for the advancement of gender equality and both women’s and civil rights. Dubbed “the Notorious RBG,” Ginsburg has been impersonated in sketches by Kate McKinnon on Saturday Night Live. On General Hospital, last Halloween, aspiring law student Molly Lansing Davis (Haley Pullos) dressed up as RBG.

Ginsburg was the focus of the 2018 film On the Basis of Sex starring Felicity Jones. The movie tells the story of young Ruth Bader Ginsburg as she and her husband Marty bring a groundbreaking case before the U.S. Court of Appeals and overturn gender discrimination that had been going on for 100 years. The film timed with Justice Ginsburg’s 25th anniversary on the Supreme Court.

Ginsburg’s other broadcast credits in the news and documentary world include: Dissenting Opinion: An Interview with Ruth Bader Ginsburg, RUTH – Justice Ginsburg in her own Words, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Democracy Now!, CBS News Sunday Morning, CBS This Morning, The Sturgeon Queens, Makers: Women Who Make America Video Archive, Yoo-Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg, 60 Minutes, Supreme Court Justice, The IAF/Justice Scalia, Supreme Court Justice Oral Arguments, The Jewish Americans, and A Century of Women.

Also in 2018, Ginsburg was the subject of a Netflix film RBG. It was directed by Betsy West and Julie Cohen. Soap Hub sends sincere sympathies to Ginsburg’s family at this difficult time.
