A Critic’s Review of General Hospital: Character Assassination

When it comes to General Hospital, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days, we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of the GH week that was.

General Hospital: A Critic’s Week In Review

If asked what we learned from last week’s General Hospital, we’d say it was how to utterly destroy a once-beloved character in the quickest way possible.

Olivia Falconeri Quartermaine (Lisa LoCicero) has devolved from one of the most level-headed female characters into a shrewish, pigheaded, poor excuse for a mother. Not one, but two doctors have told her to get Leo to a specialist, and yet Olivia continues to maintain that there is nothing wrong with her son, other than the fact that he, “lives in his own Leo world.”

The Olivia of old would have rushed Leo to that specialist to better understand what is going on with him, and what she’ll need to do moving forward to help him live his best life possible.

But this version of Olivia has decided to take a “me against the world stance,” and completely ignore every opinion that doesn’t align perfectly with hers…even if said stance will cause her to lose her husband.

And then there’s Nikolas Cassadine (Marcus Coloma). There is little doubt that he isn’t at least peripherally involved in Victor Cassadine (Charles Shaughnessy) and Peter August’s (Wes Ramsey) shenanigans – not after seeing him call up that Crete-based barback and demand an update.

Granted, Nikolas’s (almost certain) culpability makes a whole lot of sense if that screaming woman heard in the Cassadine compound turns out to be Hayden Barnes (Rebecca Budig).

Further GH Musings

* Best Keeping In Character Moment: Carly Corinthos’s (Laura Wright) not-so-subtle dig at Britt Westbourne (Kelly Thiebaud). “I hear you’re taking Jason away from [Sonny and me].

* Best LOL Line: Sam insists that her children come first.

* Is it just us, or did no one on General Hospital seem particularly affected by Drew Cain’s (Cameron Mathison) apparent death? Neither Anna Devane (Finola Hughes) nor Robert Scorpio (Tristan Rogers) attempted to search for him in the river he plunged into. Sam McCall (Kelly Monaco) and Dante Falconeri (Dominic Zamprogna) practically shrugged their shoulders when told that Drew disappeared after being riddled with bullets.

At least Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) has an excuse for his (non)reaction: he’s a stoic so-and-so at the best of times, and he’s been burned once too often – and quite recently as it happens; if there’s no body, he ain’t buying that the person is dead.

* There is no such thing as coincidence in a soap opera. The mystery man shadowing Curtis Ashford (Donnell Turner) and Portia Robinson (Brook Kerr) is obviously the dead father that Curtis told Portia about.

* It’s a toss-up, it really is; in fact, we’re going bestow the Worst Absentee Parent award to both Jeff Webber, and Frisco Jones.
