The Sunday night episode of HBO’s Big Little Lies was aptly titled, “She Knows,” as several characters came into some important information relative to their lives. All of the storylines moved forward in a shocking and sometimes haunting way.
The fractured marriage of Madeline and Ed seemed to spiral even further downward, Mary Louise took steps towards villainy, while Bonnie and Jane continued to struggle with events from their past. Here’s a look at the top five OMG moments from this week’s Big Little Lies episode!
Burn, Baby, Burn!
If Renata Klein were played by a different actress, we might not be feeling sorry for her, but the incomparable Laura Dern manages to make her character a big pain one minute and then, painfully vulnerable the next.
After losing big at a bankruptcy hearing (in part, because of her attitude), Renata threw a ’70s disco-themed birthday party for her daughter, Amabella (Ivy George). As Renata watched her daughter dance, the realization hit her like a ton of bricks that she’ll never be able to give her daughter something like this again.
Take It Outside, Boys
The simmering tension between Nathan (James Tupper) and Ed (Adam Scott) reached a boiling point and got physical — during a kid’s birthday party, no less! We have a feeling that this isn’t over between them. At least this time, Renata jumped in and broke it up.
THAT Conversation
Jane (Shailene Woodley) freaked out a bit dancing close with Corey (Douglas Smith) and escaped for some air. When Corey found her, rather than shutting down she decided to finally tell him how Ziggy (Iain Armitage) was conceived. It was a huge moment for her and when he reached out and took her hand, we all gave a sigh of relief with her.
Master Stroke
Elizabeth (Crystal Fox), Bonnie’s (Zoë Kravitz) mom, had a stroke and a seizure at Amabella’s party! (Fortunately, this was at the end of the party, so the good news is the party wasn’t ruined!) She wakes up after surgery, but she has a vision of Bonnie floating in the water. Will she drown, or is Bonnie suffering a fatal fate merely a red herring?
Power Play
Mary Louise (Meryl Streep) had papers drawn up to challenge Celeste (Nicole Kidman) for custody of the boys. Before telling her, Mary Louise said she wasn’t convinced Perry raped Jane and wondered how many others there were, causing Celeste to slap her. No shrinking violet, Mary Louise asked her daughter-in-law if this was “foreplay?” (Ouch!)
