Game of Thrones is a show known for having a lot of characters who aren’t purely good or purely evil. In fact, some of the best characters on the show fall in the grey area — sometimes they’re heroic and save the day and other times they do the wrong thing.
While it can be difficult to pick favorites when it comes to the HBO series, there are a few characters who stand out among the rest. Whether it’s their incredible story arc or great perspective on life, here — in no particular order — are the top five best characters on GOT.
Jorah Mormont (Iain Glen)
Despite starting out as a spy for Varys, Jorah became 100% loyal to Dany. He saved her life multiple times and loved her knowing she couldn’t love him back. He even ignored a royal pardon that would’ve allowed him back in Westeros. He fought for his Queen to his last dying breath, which is exactly how he would’ve wanted to leave this world.
Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie)
Brienne is one of the strongest characters on GOT, without question. She is a fierce warrior and is completely loyal, like her sword’s name — Oathkeeper. In a world full of characters that quickly turn their back on those they love to save themselves, Brienne has always kept her word.
Arya Stark (Maisie Williams)
Arya’s character development over the course of the last eight seasons is unparalleled. She went from being a young girl desperate to learn how to fight to an assassin who took out the Night King. She now knows exactly who she is and is extremely focused, which makes her inspiring to watch.
Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage)
The Lannisters are a hard family to root for, but it’s pretty easy to love Tyrion. Not only is he always the smartest man in the room, but he also tries to do what is right. Plus, he has an incredible sense of humor — which he needed to see him through the horrible way his father and Cersei treated him his entire life.
Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke)
While a controversial character at the moment, there’s no question Daenerys is one of the best characters on the show. She went from being a scared young girl to being the Breaker of Chains and the Mother of Dragons. Her singular goal has been to take over the Iron Throne while shedding her father’s reputation which she ultimately couldn’t.
