This is Us returned from its holiday hiatus and wasted no time getting to the meat of the big stories in the lives of the Big 3, and though there was very little of Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca (Mandy Moore) in the episode, it was nice that they didn’t drag out some of these storylines. But there is some movement we’d like to see happen.
There are several stories happening in the universe of the show that we are excited to see develop further. Here’s what we hope to see happen next:
Randall Discovers His Mother
Randall (Sterling K. Brown) was contacted by a mysterious man who said he knew his mom and sent an old photo of her and William to show he wasn’t just kidding around. Although Randall initially wasn’t going to reach out, fearful that his dad had lied to him about his mother having died, a talk with his therapist, followed by a heart-to-heart call with Kevin (Justin Hartley), made him reach out.
The man, Hai (Vien Hong), explained that Laurel had been living in New Orleans, though she passed away about six years ago. He invited Randall to come and see the places his birth mother loved and hear stories about her. We need Randall to take him up on his offer and learn what kept his mother away from him.
Judging by the previews for next week, it looks like Randall and Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) are headed to the Big Easy. The couple needs to let loose and have some fun while they are there, as things have been a bit too depressing in their household of late.
Kate Opens Up
Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Toby (Chris Sullivan) share a heart-to-heart about her decision to have an abortion when she was 18, and though it’s a tough conversation and Toby is unsure why his wife hid the information from him, he eventually helps her put her demons behind her by driving her to San Diego so she can confront her ex, Marc.
Not surprisingly, Marc is a bit of a loser, and Kate is able to unload all her ill feelings and things she’s been bottling up — and walks away a new woman. Now, we need Kate to use this newfound empowerment and do something strong in her life. She’s been a victim for too long and it would be nice to see her find a nice career or even go back to singing and starting a successful career.
Kevin Sets His Course
Kevin and Madison (Caitlin Thompson) seem to be hanging on by a thread in their almost “pretend” state of love as they wait out the months until their twins are born. When Kevin needs to go to Vancouver for a few weeks to finish his movie, Madison is all too eager to have him go and think about what he really wants from his life.
She makes clear that jet-setting to film sets is not the life she envisions for her and the twins, and Kevin is thrown. This is a relationship that just isn’t working and will never be the grand love that Pearson men are known for. The backstory showing teen Kevin and Sophie is most likely setting up their eventual reunion, and it’s one that most fans probably want for him.
Madison isn’t a bad person, but something needs to come between her and Kevin, whether it’s a simple breakup, a tragedy of some sort, or maybe we’ll finally learn why they spent so much attention on her doctor last season (a possible new romance for her perhaps?).
