When This Is Us returns in January, viewers are going to learn more about Kate’s backstory. As viewers who saw the fall finale recall, Kate (Hannah Zeile) learned that she was pregnant.

TV Line has some photos showing Kate in a scene with ex-boyfriend Marc (played by Austin Abrams), the jerk who locked her out of the family cabin. While Rebecca (Mandy Moore) told Marc to take a hike and never see her daughter again, Kate’s (presumed) baby daddy is back.
Present-day Kate (Chrissy Metz) has shared with hubby Toby (Chris Sullivan) that she never shared the secret of her pregnancy with anyone — not her mother, her brothers, or even him (until now).
It looks like we may get some answers when the show returns in January since it seems we’ll be seeing that no-good Marc again. Will we see him react to finding out she’s pregnant? Will he insist that she get an abortion? Or perhaps — does he do something to her that causes her to lose the baby? Because there’s no way she disappeared from her family for eight months and gave birth. Right?!

Viewers have seen Kate in various time periods throughout her turbulent life. She’s dealt with weight issues and has blamed herself for her father’s untimely passing (Jack, played by Milo Ventimiglia, went back into the family’s burning house to rescue the family dog; Jack came back out but died shortly thereafter at the hospital).
Kate entered an abusive relationship with Marc following her father’s death after meeting him at a music store. In her 20s, she had an affair with a married man while working as a waitress.
Her life has had many moments of joy including meeting and marrying Toby whom she met at a weight-loss support group. After Toby had a heart attack, he proposed to Kate and they married. Later, Kate gave birth to their son, Jack, named after her late father. Kate has also found happiness in singing, which she has pursued professionally.
After accepting the fact that Jack is blind, Kate and Toby decided to adopt a baby as another pregnancy for Kate might prove too risky. This Is Us returns with new episodes on Tuesday, January 5 at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
