The View co-host Meghan McCain wasn’t on the show on Monday and now viewers are learning there was a good reason as to why. The conservative talk show panelist and her husband, Ben Domenech, welcomed their daughter, Liberty Sage McCain, on Monday night.
A rep for McCain says that mother and daughter “are happy and healthy” according to People. About two weeks ago, McCain shared on social media that her due date was approaching. On September 18, she wrote: “2.5 weeks until my due date and trying to keep myself looking as stylish as humanly possible while feeling like Shamu.”
The View panelist announced in March that she was pregnant, but was hesitant about exposing her offspring to the harsh words that go along with social media posts, citing mean words that were written about her late dad, Sen. John McCain.
“People keep asking and requesting I show pics & details of my pregnancy,” McCain wrote on social media last spring. “Given that people write on photos I put up of my family they are glad my Dad got cancer and he’s in hell, I thought I would leave my unborn child out of the social media cesspool as much as is possible.”
While regular viewers of The View have heard Joy Behar talk about her husband Steve and Sunny Hostin and Sara Haines talk about their families, McCain has said she’s going to guard her family’s privacy as much as possible. “I believe children have a right to privacy and hope you will all understand as we navigate this as much as possible going forward without sacrificing our comfort or safety,” McCain wrote.
The View’s Twitter account shared the news of McCain’s daughter entering the world: “We are excited to share the happy news that our @MeghanMcCain and her husband Ben Domenech have welcomed their first child, daughter Liberty Sage McCain Domenech!”
No word yet on how long McCain may (or may not) be absent from The View while on maternity leave. As the hosts are self-quarantining at home and doing the show from their residences, it’s possible that viewers could see McCain sooner rather than later.
Oscar-winning actress Whoopi Goldberg is The View’s moderator. She along with Behar, Haines, Hostin, and McCain comprise the show’s panel. The View began in 1997, the brainchild of legendary newswoman Barbara Walters. The original cast included Walters, Meredith Vieira, Behar, Star Jones, and Debbie Matenopoulos. The View airs weekdays on ABC. Check local listings for air times.
