Ryan Gosling Shares Secret Love For Soaps

In the recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, host Josh Horowitz spoke with Ryan Gosling about his latest project, the film adaptation of Project Hail Mary. The conversation shifted to soap operas when Gosling admitted that he’s a huge fan of the genre.

He has fond memories of staying home from school and watching classic soaps like DAYS. Gosling proved that he’s knowledgeable about some of the classic storylines that played out in Salem. His love for soaps caused him to have massive respect for soap actors, including the legendary Deidre Hall.

“They do not get the love they deserve,” Gosling said, referring to DAYS. “The amount they have to memorize the night before … like 10 pages of dialogue. They get one take, and it’s impossible scenarios.”

Remember When DAYS Toyed With the Supernatural?

Gosling recalled the episode in which Hall’s character, Marlena, was possessed. “This is right around when X-Files was a big deal. Suddenly, everything got supernatural. She was possessed by the devil,” the actor said.

Gosling brought up an interesting point. In the 90s, there was a surge in supernatural storylines. Viewers couldn’t get enough of shows like The X-Files, Unsolved Mysteries, and Twin Peaks.

Even DAYS wanted to get in on the fun with its iconic storyline featuring Marlena. The success of the soap even led to the short-lived supernatural soap opera, Passions. Gosling was impressed by the legendary actress taking on an unexpected storyline.

“It was an incredible acting class. What’s amazing is I remember that thinking, ‘My God! Deidre Hall’s a great actress because she has to act possessed right now. That just seems like a lot to ask of her,” Gosling recalled.

Since then, he stopped watching soaps to enjoy life. The last time he tuned into DAYS, Marlena was “possessed again.” Gosling noticed that his “life keeps crossing paths when Deidre Hall is possessed!”
