Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams co-starred in one of the most beloved romance films in recent times, The Notebook, so it was fitting that they took their characters’ love story onscreen and decided to have their own love story off-screen.

Gosling and McAdams met on the set of The Notebook in 2003, but it certainly wasn’t love at first sight. In fact, according to director Nick Cassavetes, the two did not get along while filming and at one point Gosling asked if Cassavetes could replace McAdams with somebody else!
Falling In Love
Despite not having the best filming experience, Gosling and McAdams warmed up to each other eventually and realized they had feelings for one another once the cameras stopped rolling. They started dating in 2005, following the release of the movie.

Best Kiss
Gosling and McAdams’s most iconic moment as a couple has to be when they recreated their very famous kiss from The Notebook at the 2005 MTV Movie Awards while accepting the award for Best Kiss. They each walked across the stage from either end, McAdams jumped into Gosling’s arms, and the pair shared a steamy kiss before walking away with the trophy.
The Breakup Part 1
After two years of dating, Gosling and McAdams called it quits on their relationship. While the split was difficult for the actors, it also deeply affected fans of The Notebook, who were invested in their romance. In fact, Gosling revealed after the split that people would come up to him and yell at him for no longer being with McAdams.
The Breakup Part 2
Despite their breakup in 2007, Gosling and McAdams remained very close and still saw one another. The couple briefly reunited in 2008, but they decided the reunion wasn’t meant to be and broke up again.
