Sarah Jessica Parker and Robert Downey Jr. were together for a long time in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, and though they’re no longer together, their romance made a big impact in Hollywood at the time.
While we know they’ve both moved on, here is a look back at their young love story. From how the couple first met to their eventual split, find out more about this once great celebrity romance.
The two actors met while on the set of the 1984 film Firstborn. They were both 18 years old and were playing classmates in the movie. While shooting the movie, Parker was also in an off-Broadway play and asked Downey if he’d like to meet her after the show.
Moving Quick
Just eight weeks after the couple started dating, they moved in together and became inseparable. Parker revealed in an interview that they used to throw water balloons at their neighbors’ homes, just for fun. Though they never officially got engaged, Parker did wear a diamond band on her ring finger that she explained was a “hanging-out-together ring.”
The Struggle
The couple was together for most of their 20s, but it wasn’t an easy road for their love. Downey was struggling with alcoholism and had a drug problem. She tried to take care of him and be understanding about his issues, but his addiction caused a big rift in their relationship.
After seven years together, Parker and Downey called it quits in 1991. Despite the fact that they were very much in love, Downey’s addiction was the main reason they split. Parker later revealed she spent too much time worrying about if he was going to be OK and didn’t want to feel like a parent in her relationship.
25 Years Later
Nearly 25 years after they broke up, Parker and Downey reunited in New York City and got to spend time with one another. Downey told Howard Stern that he got to meet Parker’s kids and spend time with her husband, Matthew Broderick. Despite the fact their breakup was difficult, there’s no bad blood between the two.
