Courteney Cox and David Arquette married during the height of the actress’s fame on the hit NBC show Friends, and though their love story didn’t last, they had America rooting for them.
Despite their breakup, the former pair remains close to this day for the sake of their child. From how they first met to their eventual split, find out more about this once great celebrity romance.
The pair met at a pre-party before they filmed their movie, Scream, back in 1996. While they did fall in love on set, Arquette revealed he actually tricked the Friends actress into dating him, as he was initially more interested in her than she was into him.
The Engagement
Just a couple of years after meeting, the couple got engaged while vacationing on the East Coast in 1998. Arquette got on one knee and referred to the actress as “Courteney Cox Arquette” before asking if she’d marry him. She, of course, said yes and was given a Victorian engagement ring. Not to mention, Cox’s family was also on vacation with them and got to witness the romantic moment.
The Wedding
About one year after getting engaged, they tied the knot on June 12, 1999, in San Francisco, California in front of around 250 guests. The ceremony was held inside Grace Cathedral and was certainly a star-studded affair, as Jennifer Aniston, Brad Pitt, Patricia Arquette, Nicolas Cage, Jon Lovitz, and many other A-list stars were in attendance. Both bride and groom wore Valentino while Cox carried a bouquet of red roses as she walked down the aisle to Paul McCartney’s Maybe I’m Amazed.
Five years after they got married, the couple welcomed their daughter, Coco, on June 13, 2004. She had experienced one miscarriage prior to Coco’s birth and seven more after. Jennifer Aniston is Coco’s godmother. Courteney Cox was open about suffering from postpartum depression after giving birth.
Parting Ways
Despite being very against divorce, the couple separated in 2010 after over a decade of marriage. Cox was reportedly frustrated with Arquette’s behavior and didn’t want to act like his mother anymore. Arquette filed for divorce in 2012, and it was finalized in May 2013.
