Mark Consuelos shocked All My Children fans with his plans for his inheritance. Surprisingly, it doesn’t involve his kids. He wants to give his inheritance to his dog.
Going To The Dogs
Consuelos shares three kids with his wife, Kelly Ripa: Michael, 27, Lola, 23, and Joaquin, 21. On a recent episode of Live with Kelly and Mark, Consuelos talked about whether pets should “inherit your real estate,” reports Decider. Ripa didn’t understand the meaning behind it. Consuelos read a report that claimed, “You know pet bequests have been known to be challenged in court, sometimes successfully.”
Ripa shared with the audience that heiress Leona Helmsley left $12 million to her dog, Trouble, after she passed away. Consuelos got confused when he read the article. Ripa chided him, saying, “Yes, it’s important to read the article before you…” Consuelos corrected himself, noting, “Pet bequests are considered in all U.S. states property, you can’t leave the money.”
He still got the perfect idea. Consuelos thhen declared, “I’m leaving everything to Lena,” referring to their dog. He doesn’t want to leave the inheritance to their kids. “Because you know you want to skip the kids? What is that? Generation skipping,” Consuelos explained, referring to the latest trend called the generation-skipping tax.
According to Investopedia, generation-skipping is a federal tax on an inheritance that prevents the donor from avoiding real estate taxes. They skip their children by leaving their inheritance with something else, like their pets. Consuelos loved the idea. He also thought Lena would as well. He thinks their dog would “appreciate it much more than our kids will appreciate it.”
Ripa finally came around to her husband’s idea. She admitted that it was a “great plan.” The AMC alumni agreed to hire lawyers. Sadly, Consuelos and Ripa said goodbye to their other dog, Chewie, in February. Learn the details of Ripa and Consuelos’ devastating loss here.
