The producers of Lost in Space are deeply considerate of an enormous and personal loss in the life of cast member Ignacio Serrichio. The actor who plays Don West (and arrived on the scene as Diego Alcazar on General Hospital) is sharing how they are helping him honor his late brother in various episodes of the Netflix sci-fi series based on the popular Irwin Allen series from the 1960s.
In the third episode of Season 2 at the 16:24 mark, viewers will see a plaque with the name “Alejandro Daiman Serricchio” on it. That’s the name of the actor’s late brother. The actor explained in an Instagram post how this tribute/Easter egg came to be.
“This is the scene where Judy [Taylor Russell] walks into the Hall Of Heroes,” Serricchio wrote. “While filming season 2, my dear friend and Production Manager Lauren (@nikesandbeer) approached me and asked me if I would be ok with them making a plaque with my brothers name.
“My little brother Alejandro died of suicide almost 4 years ago due to his depression. I was speechless when she proposed this. I obviously said yes. In every project I’m a part of, I include my little brother somehow; whether it’s in pictures on the show The Inmate or the necklace I’m wearing for Don West which has written on it a nickname we used for each other. But I didn’t ask for this, they came to me with the idea,” he wrote.
“They took time out of the millions of things they had going on to think about me and what I care about. When we say we’re family on @lostinspace , we ARE a FAMILY. These people have been with me through my hardest times and made me feel comfortable every day on set. I was able to share my story and struggles without feeling judged. Not only did they make this plaque, but our incredible Executive Director Alex Graves and show runner @zestyville decided to open the shot with it and they kept it on the final edit of the show. This is one of the most incredible gestures anyone has ever done for me and my family.
“I choose to continue my brothers legacy through my work and be a voice for those who feel like they’re alone in this fight. I share this with you all to show you the importance of creating a safe space where people can be themselves without judgement or stigma. I am forever indebted to my family on #lostinspace and I love everyone so much and I’m grateful beyond words. ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ . . . . . . . . #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #endthestigma #family #yourenotalone #hereforyou”
