Doctor Odyssey is at risk of cancellation. It’s currently on thin ice because it’s expensive to produce. But it would be a mistake for ABC to cancel this series.

Has Doctor Odyssey Been Renewed?

Deadline reported that Shifting Gears was renewed for Season 2. The network also renewed Grey’s Anatomy, 9-1-1, The Rookie, and Will Trent earlier this month. It also said yes to Abbott Elementary and High Potential. The only scripted series that hasn’t been renewed is Doctor Odyssey.

The guest stars and big production makes this series expensive to make. Ryan Murphy’s soapy cruise could see itself sailing away for good. In addition, sources suggested that the Season 1 finale could be a series finale. Yet, the network is struggling with a lack of scripted shows. ABC needs this show more than anything. Here are three reasons why.

1 – Not Your Normal Medical Drama

When you typically think of medical dramas, you think of Grey’s Anatomy or ER. Everyone is raving about Max’s breakout hit, The Pitt. There’s no denying that medical dramas are having a moment right now. And what’s interesting is that three of these new shows are fronted by former ’90s heartthrobs.

The Pitt stars Grey’s Anatomy hunk Noah Wyle. Over on FOX is Doc, which stars Scott Wolf of Party of Five fame. Meanwhile, Dawson’s Creek alum Joshua Jackson takes on the role of Dr. Max Bankman, who handles the emergencies on The Odyssey. What makes this show different from the rest is that it handles high-stakes diseases and viruses at sea. And the show is much slicker than the ones set in a gray hospital.

2 – Celebrity Guest Stars

Each week’s episode has a theme. It also has guest stars such as Shania Twain, who plays Heather. Other guest starring roles included the likes of General Hospital alums John Stamos and Donna Mills. Stars is what makes this series special. It’s the reason why The Love Boat was so popular in its heyday. Fans look forward to seeing who will board The Odyssey next.

3 – Throuple Drama

Episode 14 teased more throuple drama. There was something for everyone during “Hot Tub Week.” Avery (Phillipa Soo) found out that she wasn’t pregnant after all. She had a cyst in her ovary, which caused a false positive on the multiple pregnancy tests she took. Though this news was gutwrenching, it suggested that Avery will continue to explore her relationship with Max and Tristan (Sean Teale).

Meanwhile, Captain Robert Masssey (Don Johnson) is the one who’s dealing with baby drama. He feared that he’s too old to become a father again, as he learned that he had a shingles outbreak. This was probably caused by the stress of the baby news. While he’s delighted, Captain Massey still has his late wife on his mind.

He had a conversation with a younger version of Katherine (Dianna Agron). She teased, “It’s okay to be in love with two people at once.” This also suggests that there will be plenty of angst and storylines for the throuple, which is the most unique relationship dynamic currently on primetime television.

This episode alone gave fans everything they wanted. There were even gratuitous shots of Tristan and Max shirtless. Hopefully, ABC will make the right call by renewing it for a second season. If not, the show could always move to Hulu, where they could push the envelope even further.
