Never saw this coming. An epic Thursday Night Doc Odyssey and 911 crossover on ABC will unfold in late March. Yes, that means 1) the two shows are in the same universe, and 2) we’ll get Angela Bassett joining Joshua Jackson and Don Johnson on ABC’s rookie cruise ship medical series.

First Responder Meet-Up

Variety initially reported the exciting news. The crossover will take place on March 20 during Casino Week on board Doc Odyssey’s resident cruise ship, The Odyssey. Bassett’s 911 character, LAPD Sergeant Athena Grant, will be on the ship in an official capacity.

Take a look at the episode’s synopsis, “Unexpected guest Athena Grant suspects two passengers are targeting the ship’s vault. Enlisting Max’s (Joshua Jackson) help, Athena raises the stakes in a dangerous game where not everyone will end up with a winning hand.”

It isn’t surprising that Sgt. Grant is the sole LAPD officer to embark on this dangerous trip— Athena almost always works solo. She’s badass like that. What is surprising is that she’s even setting foot on another boat after her last disastrous cruise. Athena and her husband Bobby (Peter Krause) almost died on a honeymoon cruise during season seven. Think terrorists, explosions, and a sinking ship. It was a cruise from hell, but the two acted their normal, heroic selves and came out of it unscathed.

If you’re wondering how these two shows are connected, Doc Odyssey and 911 are Ryan Murphy (Nip/Tuck, Glee, American Horror Story) productions. Both dramas have also been on hiatus since last November. The long mid-season break for the ABC series finally comes to an end on Thursday, March 6.

When Doc Odyssey returns, the lovably dysfunctional crew will have to deal with sharks. Meanwhile, when 911 resumes its eighth season, Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) gets kidnapped.

911 airs Thursdays on ABC at 8 p.m. ET and PT. Doc Odyssey follows at 9 p.m. ET and PT. Shortly after premiering on broadcast television, the shows will stream on Hulu. Look for the crossover on March 20.
