Grey’s Anatomy Star Patrick Dempsey Is Returning To Television

There’s good news and bad news for fans of Grey’s Anatomy’s star Patrick Dempsey. The good news is that the actor who brought Meredith Grey’s true love, Dr. Derek Shepard (AKA “McDreamy”), to life is on his way back to television.

Patrick Dempsey Returns To TV

Alas, the bad news is he’s not on his way back to Grey Sloan Memorial. Dempsey has partnered up with CBS to develop a new series according to EW.

Dempsey will be trading in the unique skyline of Seattle for the historic sights of Washington. D.C. The pilot he’s shooting is titled Ways and Means and focuses on a powerful congressional leader, played by Dempsey, who pairs up with an idealistic young congresswoman from across the aisle in an attempt to save American politics.

Ways and Means comes from executive producers and writers Mike Murphy and Ed Relinch. Nina Tassler, Denise Di Novi, and Tom Lassally will executive produce. Joannie Burstein will co-executive produce.

Grey’s Anatomy Past

Derek’s death in 2015 rocked Grey’s Anatomy fans everywhere as he and Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) had worked so hard to find happiness. The character had appeared in the show’s pilot. Viewers met Derek when he was estranged from his doctor wife, Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh).

A former Chief of Surgery at Seattle Grace Mercy West, Derek had three children with Meredith. Dempsey earned two Golden Globe nominations for his work on Grey’s for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series in 2006 and 2007.

Dempsey’s other TV credits include regular roles on The Devil and Fast Times. He’s done guests spots on Once and Again and Will & Grace. He’s appeared in the TV mini-series J.F.K.: Reckless Youth (in which he played President John F. Kennedy) and in the TV movies The Escape, The Player, and Odd Jobs.

CBS (along with the other networks) will announce which pilots have been picked up for the fall TV season in May. Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
