Patrick Dempsey has been off of Grey’s Anatomy for quite a while now, but that doesn’t mean we don’t miss McDreamy. Though Meredith has moved on with someone else, we’ll always be Team MerDer!
From his amazing hidden talent to his beloved hobby, here are five fast facts you need to know about former Grey’s Anatomy star Patrick Dempsy (ex-Derek Shepherd).
Hidden Talent
While Dempsey was growing up, he started competing in juggling competitions. In fact, he got second place at the International Jugglers’ Association Championship in the juniors category back in 1981.
Early Challenge
Dempsey revealed in 2008 that he was diagnosed with dyslexia at 12 years old. Though this impacted his ability to succeed in school (and can’t make memorizing scripts easy), it ultimately taught him the importance of hard work.

Speed Racer
Along with acting, Dempsey considers auto racing to be one of his favorite activities. In fact, he has competed in a number of Pro-Am events, including the Rolex 24 at Daytona.
Leaving Grey’s
After being on Grey’s Anatomy for over a decade, Dempsey decided to leave the show following Season 11. Though his departure was believed to be mutual, there were rumors he and creator Shonda Rhimes were not getting along during this period of time.
Second Chances
Dempsey married his second wife, Jillian Dempsey, in 1999. They have three children together, but in 2015 she filed for divorce. However, they ended up reconciling and called off their divorce one year later.
