The brainy third episode of season 14 of Grey’s Anatomy most certainly takes up where episode two left off: Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) tries to deal with the fact that she has been hit with a giant cranial tumor.
So, then what happens? Well, word gets out about this secret as the patient gets counseling on what to do about the big bad lump stuck in the part of the brain that controls her personality and her decision making.
Yes, there’s a reason this complicated Grey’s character tends to act in crazy ways every now and then.
Anyway, the acclaimed and now-sidelined neurosurgeon brings in her Johns Hopkins mentor, Dr. Tom Koracick (Greg Germann), to take care of her most pressing problem.
He’s the big cheese at his home hospital, with an ego and arrogance to match (sound familiar?). Amelia will now have to stand down as Tom takes over the case, as well as her resident, Deluca (Giacomo Gianniotti).
Meanwhile, Deluca must keep Amelia’s secret (HIPAA laws!) but he tries to get around this obstacle by playing a desperate variation of charades with Maggie (Kelly McCreary) as his bewildered partner.
He maneuvers his ex-girlfriend to face Amelia’s MRI scan showing the huge growth and then says out of context things like his wish to “ameliorate the situation” and he aims to “shepherd in a new era.” Maggie has no clue about what he’s talking about and or about what is going on.
Meanwhile, Amelia is pushed by Tom to talk to Webber (James Pickens Jr.) about her precarious circumstances. The wise older doctor makes his colleague realize she needs to let her people in on the dire situation. She tells Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), Maggie and, eventually, Owen (Kevin McKidd). FINALLY!
Meanwhile, interspersed into this packed hour of medical drama, a patient is in labor far too long. So, to alleviate the situation, Deluca’s sex-obsessed sister suggests she have an orgasm to help. The pregnant lady’s husband assists.
Also, a kid ends up in the ER due to a very dramatic Hoco Pro (for the uninitiated, that’s short for homecoming proposal).
This particular gesture makes the object of his affection very popular at school so the teen decides to decline the inventive invitation until Jo (Camilla Luddington) makes her see the error or her ways.
Grey’s Anatomy airs on Thursdays at 8 p.m. on ABC.
