Grey’s Anatomy News: The Show Returns to Production Next Week

The doctors are in! Grey’s Anatomy is going back into production next week and the cast is assembling even sooner — like tomorrow — for a virtual table read of a new episode.

Grey’s Anatomy Set To Return

TVLine reports that Season 17 of the medical-themed drama will commence the week of September 7. ABC had no comment on the report. Grey’s will be incorporating the COVID-19 pandemic into the show’s new season. The drama picks up six weeks into the crisis, allowing time for it to sink in with the show’s characters.

As medical professionals are making sacrifices in real-life by not going home to their families (so as not to potentially spread the virus to their loved ones) so, too, will some of the personnel at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

Grey’s will delve into real-life situations that have resulted from coronavirus such as people in the early months of illness being afraid to go to a doctor.

Grey’s Anatomy stars Ellen Pompeo as Meredith Grey; Chandra Wilson as Miranda Bailey; James Pickens, Jr. as Richard Webber; Kevin McKidd as Owen Hunt; Kim Raver as Teddy Altman; Jesse Williams as Jackson Avery; Camilla Luddington as Jo Wilson; Caterina Scorsone as Amelia Shepherd; Kelly McCreary as Maggie Pierce; Giacomo Gianniotti as as Andrew DeLuca; Chris Carmack as Atticus “Link” Lincoln; Jake Borelli as Levi Schmitt; and Greg Germann as Tom Koracick.

As a reminder, Season 16, abbreviated because of the coronavirus, ended with: Bailey helping Amelia give birth to Link’s son, Link helping with Richard’s surgery and him seeing his newborn son.

Krista Vernoff serves as the show’s executive producer. She is also the showrunner for sister series Station 19, which tells the stories of firefighters and paramedics on a station located not far from Grey Sloan Memorial. This allows for numerous crossovers throughout the year (and sweeps periods!). Grey’s Anatomy’s Season 17 premiere will air on ABC later this fall.
