The Ventura County Sherriff department’s official Twitter account announced late Wednesday evening that they were searching for a possible drowning victim on Lake Piru. Four hours later, they announced the name of the person missing — Naya Rivera, who played Santana Lopez on the hit show, Glee.
The first message from the department announced that an air unit was on the scene and that SAR Dive Team and PIO (public information officer) were on the way. They later tweeted the following, “The missing person at Lake Puru has been identified as Naya Rivera, 33, of Los Angeles. SAR operation will continue at first light.”
Lake Piru is in Ventura County, California and the actress had shared some images of herself in a bathing suit, possibly from the trip, to her Instagram account. The last post on her account was of her with her son, Josey (his father is ex-husband, actor Ryan Dorsey), which said, “just the two of us.”
According People.com, “The actress and her 4-year-old son, Josey Dorsey, rented a pontoon boat and were swimming in the water. After the boat was overdue for return after the three-hour rental, staff at the lake found it at the north side of the body of water with her sleeping son aboard, but not Rivera.”
Rivera was born on January 12, 1987, in Valencia, California. She first rose to fame with The Royal Family back in 1991 but it was her role as Santana on Glee from 2009-2015, pitted often against Lea Michele’s Rachel Berry (and getting the best comeback lines) that catapulted her in pop culture. Co-stars Mark Salling (Puck) died in 2018 and Cory Monteith (Finn) in 2013.
A post Rivera wrote to Instagram six days ago seems rather prophetic, “No matter the year, circumstance, or strifes every day you’re alive is a blessing. Make the most of today and every day you are given. Tomorrow is not promised.” Entertainment Hub will keep you updated as this story develops.
