While people in countries around the world wear a mask and go about their lives in recovering economies, the debate about masks still rages on here in The United States where it has somehow become a political issue. Our favorite soap stars know the importance of masks and General Hospital star James Patrick Stuart explains why he wears one.

James Patrick Stuart Cares

“I wear a mask to protect YOU,” the actor tweeted. “Studies indicate that if I’m contagious but wear a mask and you don’t, transmission probability is about 5%. But if YOU were the contagious one and wore no mask, even if I wear one, transmission probability is 70%. So my mask is for YOU.”

Co-star Finola Hughes replied in wonder about the contrast in transmission when wearing a mask vs. not. “Those percentages…boy,” she said.

Indeed masks have been proven to be a way to halt the virus so that economies can re-open and people can live their lives — but just do it with a mask on their faces while in public. In fact, Germany and the UK, among other countries, have masks available in vending machines, Austria gives out masks to anyone walking in a supermarket, and Singapore has machines that allow you to get them for free via a government code. New York City has even started doing this, as they know first-hand how bad and contagious COVID-19 is.

James Patrick Stuart also tweeted an illustration to show what happens when one person in a conversation wears a mask as opposed to two, which you can see below.

General Hospital History

GH made its debut on April 1, 1963 and is the second longest-running daytime soap opera in American history. The longest-running sudser is Guiding Light. While it’s not the longest-running sudser, GH is the longest-running soap opera currently on air.

The soap exploded into mainstream media in the early 1980s due to the show’s immense popularity. Daytime Emmy winners Genie Francis (Laura) and Anthony Geary (ex-Luke) appeared on the covers of Newsweek and People magazines. Created by Frank and Doris Hursley, the show is currently helmed by executive producer Frank Valentini and is head written by Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor. The Corinthos, Quartermaine, Baldwin, Collins, Jerome, and Ashford families drive stories today in the show’s fictional hamlet, Port Charles. .

Bringing the Drama

GH has won the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series a record 13 times — more than any other soap opera. The show is one of four remaining daytime dramas currently on the air. The other three are Days of our Lives, The Young and the Restless (YR), and The Bold and the Beautiful (BB). GH airs weekdays on ABC. Check your local listings for air times.
