Isaiah Washington is best known for playing Dr. Preston Burke for three seasons on Grey’s Anatomy. While his time on the television show was short-lived, his character was very memorable.

Early Tragedy
Washington revealed during an interview with Star Jones that his father was murdered when he was just 13 years old. Washington was raised in Texas and graduated from Willowridge High School.

After graduating high school, Washington decided to join the United States Air Force for a period of time. He also attended Howard University and then went on to pursue his career in acting.
McDreamy Dreams
When he first auditioned for Grey’s Anatomy, Washington originally read for the role of Derek Shepherd, not Preston Burke. However, the role of Shepherd ultimately went to Patrick Dempsey, and Washington won the role of his rival, Preston Burke.
Grey’s Drama
Washington’s Grey’s Anatomy contract was not renewed after he reportedly used a homophobic slur against his co-star, T.R. Knight (ex-George), who is gay during a conversation with Patrick Dempsey.
Charity Work
After finding out his ancestors came from Sierra Leone, Washington decided to do a lot of charity work to support the country. He was even granted Sierra Leonean citizenship, which makes him the first African American to be given citizenship based solely on DNA.
