For many years, Derek Hough and Mark Ballas were the faces of Dancing With the Stars, but now the pressure is all on Val Chmerkovskiy. The professional dancer is definitely a fan favorite and one of the most recognizable faces to come out of the popular dance show.
Though he’s been dancing on our television screens for many years, there’s still a lot to learn about the 33-year-old. Read five fast facts about Val Chmerkovskiy right here!
Ukrainian Born
Though Val considers himself to be from New York and is an American, his parents actually immigrated to the United States from Ukraine back in 1994 when he was just 8 years old. His family now lives in Brooklyn, New York.
National Champion
Once his family made it to the United States, Chmerkovskiy’s brother, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, and his father opened up a dance studio. He started training at this studio and ultimately became a 14-time U.S. National Latin Dance champion!
Trained Musician
Along with being a phenomenal dancer, Chmerkovskiy is also a trained violinist! In fact, he has played the violin on stage before and has been able to incorporate his love of music into his dancing.
Dance Partner For Life
Though he’s dated a few of his Dancing With the Stars partners before, Chmerkovskiy really fell for one of his fellow pros, Jenna Johnson. The couple ultimately got engaged in June 2018 and tied the knot this past April!
Beating His Brother
Though Chmerkovskiy has followed in his brother’s footsteps his whole life, he has more Mirrorball Trophies than him with two! Poor Maks has won the coveted prize only once, though he has made the finals many times.
