For her work as Meredith Grey on Grey’s Anatomy, Ellen Pompeo has received a number of accolades – including three People’s Choice Awards, a Screen Actor’s Guild award, and two Satellite Awards. And now, she’s poised to receive yet another honor: the title of birthday girl.
And that’s because she was born on November 10, 1969, in Everett, Massachusetts, which means that this much-beloved performer is turning 51 years old today! After relocating from her hometown to Miami and then to New York City, Pompeo was discovered by a casting agent, signed to a contract, and quickly put to work as a commercial actress.
She appeared in various ads, including ones for Citibank and L’Oreal, as well as small independent films like Do You Have the Time (1995). Pompeo made her television debut in an episode of NBC’s Law & Order (1996), which led to guest roles in series such as Strangers with Candy (1999), Get Real (2000), The Job (2001), Strong Medicine (2001), and Friends (2004).
Her feature film debut came courtesy of the 1999 romantic comedy Coming Soon. She subsequently played minor roles in films like In the Weeds (2000), and Mambo Café (2000).
Pompeo gained widespread acclaim for her work in the Brad Silberling-directed drama Moonlight Mile (2002). Her other film credits include the biographical crime dramedy Catch Me If You Can (2002), Old School (2003), and Daredevil (2003).
In 2005, Pompeo was hired to headline the ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy as the titular Meredith Grey, a surgical intern at the fictitious Seattle Grace Hospital. The serial proved to be a breakout hit and critical darling which resulted in Pompeo receiving the greatest reviews of her career.
She has remained the lead character of the series and is currently one of only three actors who have remained since the introductory episode. As of 2018, Pompeo was ranked as the third highest-paid female actor on television.
The star has been married to Chris Ivery since 2007. They have three children together: two daughters, Stella Luna (born in 2009) and Sienna May (born in 2014 via gestational surrogate), and a son, Eli Christopher (born in 2016).
