At the beginning of this season of The Bachelor, viewers were promised the most intense and emotional ending ever. Was it really? Or is it going to be another season where a guy changes his mind? In part one of the big finale, which aired last night, Peter got dumped by Madison and decided to go ahead and propose to Hannah Ann.
We see Peter jogging in beautiful Australia and hear voiceovers of Peter telling himself that he’s so in love with Hannah Ann. He’s 100% certain. He’s so 100% certain that he meets with Neil Lane to pick out a ring. Next, Peter Facetimes Hannah Ann’s dad to ask for his blessing for his daughter’s hand in marriage. He says he trusts his daughter. (But Dad doesn’t say he trusts Peter. Hmmm….)
Future Imperfect
Chris joins Peter at the site where he’s set to propose only the host has potential bad news – Hannah Ann may not be coming. Pete’s bummed out! Cue the suspenseful music! Fortunately, she shows up. But he seems kind of stoic.
Pete tells Hannah Ann that he has to follow her heart – and that Madison left a few days ago. Um, dude, don’t make Hannah Ann sound like she’s winning by default! He rebounds by professing his love to Hannah Ann. “I love you, I love you, I love you,” says Pete as he goes down on one knee and proposes. She says yes! Happy music plays! Live in the studio audience, Chris (that’s Chris Harrison) says it’s not over yet. Huh? What does this mean?
Silly, it’s not Hannah Ann, who just got engaged. C’mon! It’s Peter’s mother, Barbara, who has stolen the finale with her crying jaunts as she pleads for her son to make the right decision! Pete reunites with his family to tell them the news. As he prepares to announce which woman he’s engaged to, Barbara is grasping the hands of her husband and other son, Jack, so tightly she cuts off their blood circulation.
The Crying Game
Pete says he’s engaged to Hannah Ann, sending his mother into a hysterical crying jaunt. “I can’t wait to see my daughter,” Barbara exclaims! Babs tells her son that he’s made her so happy. “And they lived happily ever after,” Barbara adds.
Pete joins Chris Harrison on The Bachelor stage to talk about his amazing day and how excited his family is. Chris asks if Pete was fully able to move on from Madison. He says those feelings don’t just disappear.
In a pre-taped segment, Peter and Hannah reunite after a month. He tells her he loves her – that there’s no doubt about that and then he breaks it off with her. He says he’s sorry. Dude, why’d you propose!? The camera cuts back to the live audience and fades to black in silence – even Babs remains quiet.
Pete tells Hannah Ann he’s sorry. There’s a box in the lower-left camera showing people’s reactions to this – including Babs because let’s face it, this is her future that’s being changed. She’s losing a daughter. Pete says he can’t give his entire heart. Hannah Ann can’t look at him anymore.
Face To Face
Hannah Ann and Pete meet on stage for the first time since their breakup. She tells him that he either doesn’t understand the weight of the words he was saying or he didn’t mean them. Which is it?
Pete claims that he loved Hannah Ann, but that he was confused and conflicted. Hannah Ann says she was blindsided. She didn’t know what she was saying yes to. Hannah Ann tells Peter that there were three women in their relationship (and believe it or not, Babs was not one of them)! She says there was herself, Madison, and Hannah Brown!
Chris checks in on Madison. She said she regrets walking away from Peter. Chris says Peter is single. Madison gets on a plane, comes to the finale, and reunites with Peter in a pre-taped segment.
Live on The Bachelor, Peter tells Chris he’s in love with Madison – the audience applauds, but Babs is NOT happy; her face is dark and frozen. Babs tells Chris that she went for Hannah Ann because she embraced her with love in an organic way. Then, she met Madison and it started off on a rocky road. Babs is not on #TeamMadison. “He is going to have to fail to succeed,” she says.
Madison, you need to run! Pete tells his mom that he loves Madison and that should be enough!
Madison says they can’t rehash the past; they need to move on. Given Barbara’s performance, this story is begging for a follow-up. Hopefully, we haven’t seen the last of Peter and Madison. Or Barbara.
