Why Comical Eugene Bradford Is Still Missed On Days of our Lives

If your history of watching Days of our Lives goes back as long as mine — specifically to the early ’80s, then you’ll probably agree with me that a character who has been long missed is Eugene Bradford.

Days of our Lives Memory Lane

Played by John de Lancie, best known for playing the all-powerful Q on Star Trek: Next Generation, Eugene added some great levity to the show and was always a hoot. Who could forget when he posed in drag as newspaper columnist Bettina Lovelorn or when he used a time machine to visit the future, bringing a robot version of his wife, Calliope (Arleen Sorkin) back with him.

Together, Eugene and Calliope were one of the most fun couples on daytime, and the intensity of their antics was only matched by the love they had for one another.

Yes, Eugene didn’t start out on the show as comic relief. In fact, when he was first introduced in Salem, he was a somewhat unhinged patient of Marlena’s and wound up kidnapping his doc. He even claimed he was the Salem Strangler and was carted away.

But Days of our Lives fans loved him and they quickly redeemed Eugene, even matching him with Marlena’s cousin Trista. Unfortunately, he was inflicted with what was called the ‘Bradford Curse,’ and people around him started to die—including his love at the hands of the Strangler (Damn you, Jake!)

Eventually, Eugene would meet his perfect match in Calliope and the two shared some of the most fun-filled adventures in DAYS history. When last we saw Eugene, he was back in his time machine going who knows where, but Calliope popped up in Salem in 2006 and expressed how she and her man were still happily married.

DAYS could use a little humor right about now, and who better to bring the funny than Eugene and Calliope? Their partner-in-crime on many adventures, Anna DiMera (Leann Hunley), is back in Salem, so they could pick up right where they left off. Also, given Eugene’s experience helping Bo Brady and Roman Brady on secret missions, he would be a great addition to the show’s next big mystery.

Days of our Lives (DOOL) airs weekdays on NBC. Check your local listings for airtimes. For more about what’s coming up in Salem, check out all the latest that’s been posted on DAYS spoilers, and for an in-depth look at the show’s history, click here.
