Fan favorite Vincent Irizarry (Deimos, Days of Our Lives) is making Daytime Emmy history this weekend.
He’s one of a few actors who’ve been nominated in all three acting categories, having earned nominations for his roles on Guiding Light and All My Children (he won for playing AMC’s Dr. David Hayward in 2009).
Soap Hub caught up with the actor at the Daytime Emmys nominees reception at the Hollywood Museum this week and chatted with the actor on his nomination, working once more with Judi Evans (Adrienne, Days; ex-Beth, GL), and if he’d be open to reprising Dr. David now that ABC has the rights once more to the AMC characters.
Congratulations; this makes you one of the few actors who’ve been nominated in all three categories you’re eligible for. What do you think of your competition?
Thank you. I think they’re all amazing actors. I’ve worked with all of them except for Scott Clifton (Liam, The Bold and the Beautiful).
It’s always a tight category no matter what. Honestly, just to get nominated is a huge accolade in and out itself.
What was it like being able to choose from multiple episodes?
We also couldn’t go over 20 minutes. I don’t think most of us even went up to 20. I chose predominately from one episode. Then, I also took a few scenes from a second one and one short one minute scene in the third one.
What story of Deimos’ did you tell in your reel?
That’s a good question. It’s a journey between Deimos and Nicole. It had a great beginning, middle and end. There was a lot of conflict with Deimos thinking Nicole had lied to him about Chloe carrying his baby.
They were very explosive scenes. Then, Nicole came to Chloe’s house and saw that Deimos was alive and that Kate had framed her.
I also included a scene after we had made love and Deimos is playing Beethoven’s fur elise on the piano. It was a very, nice, simple tender moment. It had a real beginning, middle and end.
When Sonny was kidnapped, Adrienne came over to the Kiriakis mansion and ripped into Deimos. Fans of Lujack and Beth (the characters Irizarry and Judi Evans played on Guiding Light) were cheering!
I know! I love working with Judi. It’s funny, the first day I was getting ready to work with her on Days, I took a picture with her on set, posted it online, and said we’re working together again for the first time in 30 years. Everyone went crazy. She’s fantastic.
We had some confrontational scenes that were very different from the romance [we played on GL], but I loved working with her again.
