Soap Opera Science: When Days of our Lives Went Too Far

These days, everyone is talking about listening to science, whether that means following Center for Disease Control mandates, reading Ivy League medical school studies, or just making choices about vaccines for yourself and your loved ones. Days of our Lives? Maybe not so much.

Days of our Lives — Blinded Me With Science

Now, we are going to take a quick look at life in Salem on Days of our Lives, and how science operates in a completely different universe in that exciting small midwestern town.

DAYS: The Unexpected

We bet you expect us to talk about Dr. Rolf (Will Utay) and his magic serum for bringing anyone you want back from the dead. Well, we may talk about him but not for that bit of weird science.

Or maybe you’re thinking about the magic latex mask that, when you put it on, changes not only your face, but your voice, your height, and your body. To the point where a guy who slept with you before, and now thinks you’re somebody else (whom he has also slept with), can’t tell the difference.

Days of our Lives: Really Strange

But, nope, we’re going to talk about the procedure Kristen DiMera (Stacy Haiduk) developed which allows her to secretly steal a baby from one womb (in this case, Theresa’s), and implant it in herself, then give birth to a perfectly healthy baby boy, whom Kristen named Christopher, but who Theresa (Jen Lilley) and Brady (Eric Martsolf) eventually got back and renamed Tate. That’s…not how fetuses work. In our world.

DOOL: Sound Familiar

Of course, Dr. Rolf claims this is another of his world-changing inventions – oh, did we mention the microchips that completely subsume your personality with another one? But soap fans know better.

Dr. Rolf obviously stole the technology from Dr. Greg Madden (Ian Buchanan) of Pine Valley. Back in the 1970s, when All My Children’s Erica Kane (Susan Lucci) thought she was going to get daytime drama’s first legal abortion, her doc actually performed the old switcharoo, leading to her meeting her grown son, decades later. Let’s call it the Madden-Rolf Method and leave it at that.

Days of our Lives (DOOL) airs weekdays on NBC. Check your local listings for airtimes. For more about what’s coming up in Salem, check out all the latest that’s been posted on DAYS spoilers, and for an in-depth look at the show’s history, click here.
