Lauren Koslow, the recipient of Soap Hub’s Performer of the Week Award, has guided her character through all manner of outrageous messes – like the time she was forced to decapitate and gut fish while stuck on a trawler or when she tried to snuff out a love rival with poisoned brownies.
And now, the actress is stepping up to the plate in a big way. Not only does she have to play an imprisoned and indignant Kate, but she’s also got to embody the wicked Kristen DiMera who’s doing her best impersonation of Kate!
Koslow’s first order of business was to bring her bitchy best to a confrontation between Kate and her jailer. “So what,” she spit out at Kristen, “do you get a family discount on this room…do you seriously think that you’re gonna get away with keeping me prisoner here?”
Bravado eventually gave way to pragmatism, but even a shrewd negotiator like Kate couldn’t convince Kristen that she’d keep quiet about her scheme and simply go along with whatever was demanded of her.
As a result, Kate was left to her own devices, and Kristen stalked off to don her mask and to slip into one of Kate’s “hideous outfits.” After dressing, Kristen began to practice her inflection – she had to get Kate’s way of speaking down pat before making plans to see Jake. She momentarily struggled with the phrase, “less is more,” but she eventually nailed it.
Now properly satisfied that she can make the mask-erade work, Kristen phoned Jake and set up a meeting. During the confrontation that followed, Koslow employed a few ticks that stealthy indicated that Kristen was struggling to stay true to her role – “Kate’s” eyes bugged out ever so slightly, her head bobbed from side to side a bit too vigorously, and her speech pattern was sped up just a touch.
But her scam succeeded nonetheless. Whether it was truly down to Kristen’s acting skills, or the timely intervention of Roman (Josh Taylor) is up for debate. But what isn’t in question is how much fun it was to see Lauren Koslow put in such a harrowing and hilarious situation.
