Days of our Lives unleashed a doozy of a secret: Lani’s irrepressible Aunt Paulina is actually her biological mother. While it’s a major move in the drama department, the twist upends a lot of established history and well-developed relationships. Will it totally undo Lani’s perfect world? And why did it even have to happen in the first place?
In the hands of seasoned actress/comedian Jackée Harry, Paulina Price was the perfect aunt – wild, rich, and indulgent. A whirlwind of fun and chaos. From the moment she arrived in Salem, life hasn’t been the same for anyone. Her relationship with Lani (Sal Stowers) was sweet and joyous. Paulina was all about spoiling the “niece” she loved and her adorable new twin babies. It was totally working, so why mess with it?
The original Days of our Lives plot, having Tamara Price (Marilyn McCoo) as Lani’s mother was well-rooted in Salem history. She and Marlena (Deidre Hall) go back decades as old college friends. Plus, she had a short, but sweet connection with Abe Carver (James Reynolds) that viewers witnessed. All the stars aligned when years later Lani revealed she was Tamara’s child, and viewers were totally invested in the turn. The pair even looked the part of mother and daughter; both stylish and sleek.
If Tamara isn’t Lani’s mother, does that mean Abe isn’t her father? What a shame it would be to undo the special Lani/Abe relationship that has developed over the years. Their father/daughter bond is so real and heartfelt. You can feel Lani’s love and admiration for Abe in every scene. And Abe has flourished as the perfect “girl dad.” He’s so invested in his darling Lani and has totally taken to his role as a first-time grandfather to her twins. Heck, he even babysits both of them – alone.
Aside from Lani losing the only mother she’s ever known in Tamara and the father she’s come to love in Abe, she’ll also be losing her beloved brother, Theo (Cameron Johnson). Considering how she has embraced her big sister role from the get-go, it’s sure to break her heart as well as Theo’s. Of course, Lani will be gaining a sister in spoiled bratty Chanel Dupree (Raven Bowens). But that’s more of a booby prize, isn’t it?
Perhaps DAYS has yet another twist in mind that will somehow keep Lani and Abe connected. With the show’s penchants for masks, anything is possible. Perhaps, decades ago, Abe actually bedded a masked Paulina believing she was her sister Tamara. Sure, it’s wild and far-fetched, but if it keeps Lani as Abe’s daughter, in the end, it will be well worth it.
