Between the lack of new episodes and America’s anxiety over and preoccupation with COVID-19, the daytime soaps could suffer a serious downtrend in viewership in the months ahead.
The networks need to think big to help lure audiences back to the screen. Here’s a list of four beloved actors whose returns could revive the medium.
It had been years since a young actor burst onto the scene with the fortitude of Bryan Craig (ex-Morgan, General Hospital). Cast at the age of 19, he was tasked with playing the impulsive son of mobster Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard), and later, an elaborate battle with bipolar disorder.
Craig was nothing short of brilliant, winning back-to-back Daytime Emmys in 2016 and 2017, but opted to leave the soap at the end of his contract. Bringing him back to the fold would be a major coup for GH, not to mention any of the other soaps.
After a successful run on All My Children (as Richie Novak), Billy Miller took on the role of lovable screw-up Billy Abbott on The Young and the Restless, winning three Daytime Emmy awards for his efforts.
Upon leaving the soap in 2014, he landed on GH; first playing Jason Morgan, but later was revealed to be his twin Drew Cain. Miller’s shone brightly in each of his roles, making them each relatable and memorable, while standing out as one of daytime’s top talents. Some show needs to scoop his talents, pronto.
There are few returns that could rock Salem and daytime more than Peter Reckell showing back up in Salem as Bo Brady after his character died in his beloved’s arms in 2016. Days of our Lives wouldn’t have to work too hard to fix that error — after all, Dr. Rolf (Will Utay) resides there and he’s worked his magic before… often, actually.
But even if Reckell didn’t return to his old stomping grounds, another show could certainly do well to use his built-in fanbase to develop a new character. Would DAYS fans turn the channel to watch him elsewhere? There’s only one way to find out!
After a successful primetime run on How To Get Away With Murder, Rome Flynn would be a huge get for any show — including his old stomping grounds at The Bold and the Beautiful, where he played Zende Forrester Dominguez. While it would be great for him to return there, it might be even better for another show to snap him up.
Trina’s (Sydney Mikayla) family could be invested in — where he could play either an older brother or an uncle? Or maybe Taggert had another child? Or Gia had one — and Nikolas (Marcus Coloma) could be his father! So many possibilities. And if he ended up bringing some of his primetime fans with him, even better.
