Bitch slaps, levitation, Alice’s donuts, and more are part of the first round of Days of Our Lives (DOOL) emojis on the DOOLMoji app, currently available at the App Store and Google Play Store.
The global launch of the groundbreaking app, available for the nominal fee of 99 cents, is a first of its kind for a daytime drama. It all came about because of a larger plan by the show’s powers-that-be.
An Emoji Is Born
“We initially started working on a Days of Our Lives app, which is a bigger and more complex thing,” explains Greg Meng, DAYS’ Co-Executive Producer and Executive in Charge of Production, Corday Productions Inc. “It’s a platform that we’d been working on for over a year and a half.
“In the meantime, one of the goals of the big app was to involve and provide a relationship with our family of fans,” continues Meng.
“Long story short, we were going to include the emoji-type idea in that. We were like, ‘Wait a minute. That’s its own thing. We can get that out there more quickly for people to start using and experimenting with.’ That’s why this came first.”
Feedback from Fans
Now that it’s out there, Meng and his team want to see how people start using the emjoi app. “Then we can tweak it,” he says. “We definitely are going to add to it and include all the cast and, hopefully, even past characters, if we can legally do that.
“We want to get feedback on more emotional emojis, so people can really convey their thoughts and feelings through past experiences or scenes on the show. We’re working on a second version, now.”

The first version features an array of Salem characters from Chad (Billy Flynn) to Kate (Lauren Koslow), memorable objects like Alice’s donuts and Steve’s (Stephen Nichols) harmonica, and classic onscreen moments.
Among them: a possessed Marlena (Deidre Hall) levitating and bitch slaps involving Sami (Alison Sweeney), Carrie (Christie Clark), and Nicole (Arianne Zucker).

As for version two, Meng notes that Bo (Peter Reckell) and Hope’s (Kristian Alfonso) first kiss, Susan Banks (Eileen Davidson), and an emotional tie-in to Alice and Tom (MacDonald Carey) emojis are all planned, as well as one or more honoring the late, great Stefano (Joseph Mascolo).
“The timing with the first batch wasn’t right,” says Meng, referring to the DiMera patriarch. “We wanted to be a little more sensitive with Joe’s recent passing.
“He was such an important part of the show and certainly his relationship with Marlena. Stefano was a front and center character, and we’re very interested in using him in a very unique way.”
Networking with Family
The goal of all of the above is a simple one, according to Meng. “We’ve got a loyal fan base of multiple demographics, and we’re trying to bring them into the age of social networking” he says.
“It’s a way for them to start social networking among different generations and also with our show and our cast. It’s a way for our family, all of us, to be able to communicate. It’s a gift to our fans.”
