Days of our Lives’ longtime matriarch, Alice Horton, died 10 years ago on June 23, 2010. The soap celebrated the life of the character, as well as commemorated the passing of actress Frances Reid, who played Alice from 1965 to 2007, with a beautiful memorial filled with flashbacks and appearances from past castmates.
In honor of the 10-year anniversary of Alice’s death, let’s look back at some of her best moments.
When Roman was wrongly accused of being The Salem Slasher and subsequently arrested, he was desperate to get out of jail and clear his name. So Bo (Peter Reckell) enlisted Alice’s help. She whipped up a batch of her famous donuts for the prisoner but tainted them with a special drug. Once Roman ate one and fell ill, he was transported to a hospital and escaped during the transit.
Realizing Hope (Kristian Alfonso) was about to make a huge mistake marrying sleazy Larry Welch (Andrew Masset), Alice got intricately involved in making sure it didn’t happen.
To allow Hope’s true love, Bo, time to kidnap Hope, run off with her, and make things right between them, Alice conspired to help Howie (Stanley Brock) switch places with the bride. Larry was furious when he lifted up Hope’s veil and found Howie, puckered up and ready for a kiss, beneath it. Upon learning Alice was involved in the outrageous switcheroo, her husband Tom shook his head and muttered, “Sometimes I worry about you, Alice.”
Alice was back in action helping Jennifer (Melissa Reeves) when she learned Jenn was posing as Katerina Von Leuschner and planned to marry Lawrence Alamain (Michael Sabatino). Traveling to Lawrence’s country with her granddaughter and pretending to be Cecily Smith, Alice quickly realized Jennifer was in trouble.
However, when she went to get help, Lawrence captured Alice and imprisoned her with Frankie (Billy Warlock). Ultimately, they escaped during a cave-in at Lawrence’s villa, but Alice suffered a stroke. Following surgery, however, she was back to her old feisty self.
After wrongly suspecting Tom (Macdonald Carey) was having an affair, Alice happily discovered her beloved husband was actually sneaking off to read poetry at The Beat Bar. However, it turned out he wasn’t really her beloved husband.
Alice was stunned to learn the judge that married her and Tom had never been legally sworn in. Hence, their marriage was invalid. And, to top it off, Tom knew but kept mum about the truth for years. Tom re-proposed to Alice, and they eventually tied the knot for real.
The Salem Stalker began a reign of terror in 2003, murdering several beloved town citizens, including Doug (Bill Hayes) and Maggie (Suzanne Rogers). While visiting Tom’s grave, Alice found a note from Doug naming Marlena (Deidre Hall) as his killer. When Marlena realized she’d been exposed, she murdered Alice – choking her to death with one of her donuts.
In time, Alice and all the other “victims” were revealed to be alive and well on the island of Melaswen. Andre (Thaao Penghlis) had actually faked their deaths and manipulated Marlena to help with his evil doings. Days of our Lives (DOOL) airs weekdays on NBC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
