On Days of our Lives, Johnny Dimera and Chanel Dupree totally stunned their families, when they made a big announcement: they got married while they were off vacationing in Italy. What was the surprise wedding twist like for actor Carson Boatman, who portrays the new daytime groom? The actor weighs in on his character’s marital madness.
Carson Boatman Dishes On The Johnny and Chanel Wedding
What sparked this quick Johnny and Chanel wedding?
Carson Boatman: They’ve had a couple of months to be together and to get to know each other. After all the drama [when Chanel revealed Paulina Price was Lani Grant’s mother], Johnny was like, “Let’s just get out of here. Let’s hop on the DiMera jet and go to Italy, and I’ll show you where I grew up.” They’re overcome by passion and the magic of Italy. While they’re there, Johnny proposes, and Chanel [Raven Bowens] says yes. They got married in a small Italian church and came back as husband and wife.
Is it true that Johnny’s wedding coincided with your real one to model Julana Dizon?
Carson Boatman: Yes. It’s funny, because they gave me five days off to go and get married in real life. While I was off getting married, they wrote that Johnny and Chanel went off to Italy and got married. So I got married twice in the same week.
Were you shocked that DAYS married your character off so quickly?
Carson Boatman: No. I think there’s never really a shock on DAYS. I think that’s what’s really unique about the show. You have to be ready to expect anything.
What was your reaction when you read the story turn in the script?
Carson Boatman: They send out the scripts like a week before. I read it, and I was like, “What?!?! That’s crazy.” So I texted Raven [Bowens, Chanel], ‘Hey, we’re getting married.’ She was like, “What?” I said, “Yeah, read the script.”
Did you and Raven have any input into the wedding?
Carson Boatman: Nada on that one. I don’t think we even see their vows. There’s no footage of the actual wedding. We just come back and you find out we’re married.
Can we assume that the parental reaction to these two characters’ marriage is not joyous?
Carson Boatman: You are spot on. Nobody’s parents are overly thrilled with the decision of these two kids to go off and elope in Italy. It turns into a big blowout. It’s the first time you really see Johnny acknowledge the missteps by EJ [DiMera, Dan Feuerriegel] and Sami [Brady, Alison Sweeney] as parents because they both kind of come at him. And he’s like, “Well, who are you guys to talk? Look at your terrible relationship. You were never there when I was a kid. You set horrible examples for me. No wonder I make rash decisions.” Sami doesn’t handle that well, and neither does EJ but they both handle it in different ways.
What’s it been like working with Raven now that you’re playing husband and wife?
Carson Boatman: It’s been great. She really is an incredible actress. She’s super talented. I didn’t really meet her except for quickly in the hair and makeup room before we started working together. Because she’s so talented, she’s very easy to work with. She’s worked on a few other projects, so she’s seasoned. It’s been a great experience.
