EJ DiMera has spent the last several months on Days of Our Lives behaving like a man who found a resurrection serum and immediately decided ethical boundaries were more of a fun suggestion than an actual rule. Dan Feuerriegel opened up about EJ’s mindset lately, why the character keeps causing destruction everywhere he goes, and why he personally wants EJ to finally stop apologizing for it.

Key Takeaways

  • Dan Feuerriegel said EJ is driving much of Salem’s current chaos.
  • EJ partly saw Lexie’s return as a way to regain power and control.
  • Feuerriegel said he enjoys EJ’s more emotional and vulnerable scenes.
  • He wants EJ to stop apologizing and fully own his actions.
  • Feuerriegel said EJ feels more curiosity than romance toward Cat right now.
  • He described EJ and Gwen’s relationship as a chaotic “love-hate thing.”
  • Despite everything, Feuerriegel still believes EJ truly loves Sami.

Feuerriegel Loves EJ’s Chaos

Feuerriegel spoke to Michael Fairman TV about EJ’s latest run of questionable life choices, admitting the character is “the one causing all the trouble and moving a lot of plot lines forward.” Honestly, at this point, EJ basically walks through Salem, accidentally creating three new crises before breakfast and another two by lunch.

When discussing the Lexie (Nikki Crawford) resurrection storyline, Feuerriegel explained that EJ’s motivation came from “a little bit of heart mixed with just basically capitalism.” Part of EJ genuinely wanted his sister back, but another part saw the controversial research as a way to regain power after losing control of DiMera Enterprises. Which is probably the most EJ explanation imaginable. Emotional vulnerability with a side of morally alarming business strategy.

Feuerriegel also admitted he enjoys it when EJ gets emotional moments instead of always operating in full villain mode. “I love those moments because it’s a nice reprieve from him just constantly being this and being that,” he said. Then came the really interesting part. “I would like, number one, for EJ to stop apologizing,” Feuerriegel explained, saying he wants EJ to fully own his actions instead of acting shocked every time his schemes explode in everyone’s faces afterward.

EJ’s Relationships Keep Getting More Complicated

Feuerriegel also touched on EJ’s messy relationships around Salem, including Cat (AnnaLynne McCord), Gwen (Emily O’Brien), and Sami (Alison Sweeney). Regarding Cat, he said EJ feels more “curiosity” than romance right now because the connection between them feels too coincidental to ignore. Especially once EJ started remembering pieces of the time she spent helping him recover in Italy.

His description of Gwen sounded equally chaotic. Feuerriegel called their dynamic “a love-hate thing,” comparing it to siblings constantly butting heads while still needing each other anyway. Which honestly explains almost every EJ relationship on this show. The man communicates through tension, manipulation, and the occasional emotional whiplash.

And despite everything EJ has done over the years, Feuerriegel made it very clear: “I still believe he loves Sami.” Somewhere deep in the middle of all EJ’s schemes, power plays, and increasingly questionable science projects, there is apparently still one emotional nerve Salem never fully burned out of him.
