Why DAYS’ Marlena Evans Shouldn’t Throw Stones at Working Moms

Marlena Evans Black and Roman Brady had lunch to discuss how happy they are to have a new grandson on Days of our Lives. They agreed that Eric is over the moon to finally be a dad. They then agreed that they weren’t thrilled that the baby’s mother was Sloan. But, not because Sloan has a checkered past of lying and blackmail and defending innocent people whom Salem would prefer be guilty. But, because Sloan has a high-pressure career. How will she possibly manage to be a working woman and the sort of mommy their precious Jude deserves?

Marlena Evans: Pot, Kettle, Black

We realize that Marlena (Deidre Hall) was dead for a very large part of Eric (Greg Vaughan) and Sami’s (Alison Sweeney) childhoods. (So was Roman [Josh Taylor], for that matter, but, you know, he’s a dad, so….) But, we also recall that when she was alive, for the childhoods of beloved stepdaughter, Carrie (Christie Clark), beloved stepson, Brady (Eric Martsolf), and her last daughter, Belle (Martha Madison), Marlena was…gainfully employed. And, in a pretty high-pressure career, too. One that consisted of medical emergencies…and multiple kidnappings.

Here and There

Granted, Belle and Brady did skip the intensive parenting years, from roughly ages 5 to 15, over the space of a single weekend. But, we also seem to remember entire weeks, if not months that passed with little Brady and Belle being “upstairs,” or “at camp,” or “on a sleepover,” because Marlena and John (Drake Hogysten) were too busy saving the world to help with homework or buy school clothes.

Double Standard

We also can’t remember Marlena having an opinion about Carrie, or Sami, or Belle being working moms to their kids. Yet, when it comes to her daughter-in-law, suddenly Marlena is concerned Jude will be neglected. (We’re not even addressing that Brady has spent multiple years as a single dad; a single, working dad.) We’re fine with her not liking Sloan. But, this is not the best reason for it.
