A Critic’s Review of Days of our Lives: You Win Some, You Lose Some

When it comes to Days of our Lives, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of the Days of our Lives week that was.

Days of our Lives: A Critic’s Week In Review

When Ciara Brady Weston (Victoria Konefal) clobbered Evan Frears (Brock Kelly) with that hospital tray, I cheered…but only because I had just recovered from violently rolling my eyes into the back of my head when it appeared that the scene was actually going to feature Ben Weston (Robert Scott Wilson) riding to his lady loves rescue.

It’s about time the women of Days of our Lives get to be the saviors.

Opposite Ciara’s act of heroine-ism, Paulina Price (Jackée Harry) was busying herself with covering up Lani Grant’s (Sal Stowers) involvement in TR Coates’s (William Christian) death, an act which makes very little sense to me.

Sure, TR was unarmed, but I can’t see anyone declaring what Lani did anything more than killing in defense of others.

TR had already grievously injured Abe Carver (James Reynolds) and he was in the midst of preparing to assault Paulina – and let’s not forget that TR had previously shot Eli Grant (Lamon Archey) and murdered a drug dealer in an attempt to frame him for the crime. Had Lani not pulled the trigger, who knows how much further the situation would have escalated.

I’d also be remiss if I didn’t take a moment to voice my utter disgust over the scenes that were presented on Friday’s air show – and no, I don’t mean the staged satanic ritual. You’re reading a column written by an aficionado of all things horrific and supernatural, so what was shown wasn’t something I haven’t seen in at least a half dozen Hammer films.

What I’m speaking of was the decision to have Allie Horton’s (Lindsay Arnold) rapist resurrected so that he could a) make salacious comments about his victim’s body and b) be given express permission to revictimize (read: rape) Allie as soon as the Devil had exited stage left.

Given that Days of our Lives has a spotty history when it comes to telling stories about rape – Bill and Laura Horton were a fan favorite couple despite the fact that he raped her; Sami Brady, who was violently raped in her teens, was paired, successfully, with EJ DiMera (Dan Feuerrigel) who’d coerced her into having sex with him (rape by another name) – that rape victim Shawn Brady (Brandon Beemer) is currently being portrayed as the bad guy in his storyline because he didn’t tell his wife about the extent of his assault, and that just moments prior, Evan had made a “joke” about Ciara, “liking it rough,” the exchanges just smacked of ignorance at best and a complete lack of decency at worst.

Further DAYS Musings

* While I appreciate Days of our Lives’ resident bad girl doing her best to go good, I can’t help but think it’s just too little too late. I also can’t imagine where Gwen Rizczech’s (Emily O’Brien) story goes from here.

* You Win Some: Thanks to Dr. Rolf’s memory restoring serum, Xander Cook (Paul Telfer) got “his” Sarah Horton (Linsey Godfrey) back … You Lose Some: “His” Sarah Horton only regained her memories up to the point where she and he were raising baby Mickey and were one big happy family. Will Sarah be so quick to forgive Xander the second time around?
