The date December 9, 2020, will mark Coronation Street’s 60th year in production and according to producer Iain MacLeod, the event will be commemorated in grand style — as will another very special milestone.
In an interview initially conducted for Inside Soap Magazine and later reiterated via Digital Spy, MacLeod referred to the long-running serial’s future jubilee as an “astonishing landmark.”
However, it’s not the only occasion in need of feting. “…At the start of the year, we have our 10,000th episode that we are intending to mark with something ‘classic Corrie’ that has a comedic and character-driven vibe.”
The exec added, “The 60th is likely to be something more explosive. The expectation from the audience now with anniversaries isn’t necessarily death and destruction, but that a spectacle is attached to it. We have some fairly novel ideas that we are exploring at the moment, so that should be exciting.”
Coronation Street’s 40th birthday was honored with a special live episode — barring a small, pre-taped scene featuring a cameo by His Royal Highness Prince Charles — which saw the residents of the eponymous street banding together to stop council workmen from tearing up the cobblestones that had lined the walkways since first being laid in 1902.
Ten years later, many of those same residents bore witness to one of the area’s greatest tragedies — an explosion, originating in The Joinery restaurant that caused sections of the overhead viaduct to give way, resulting in an oncoming tram jumping the track and crashing onto the street below.
The immediate aftermath of the accident formed the basis for a Coronation Street live episode — one hour in length — that culminated with the deaths of two beloved characters, Ashley Peacock (a 15-year veteran) and Molly Dobbs.
The soap airs in its home country of Great Britain every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at both 7:30 pm and 8:30 pm on ITV.
