Ted King has been in the soap world since his short-term role as Ron Nettles on Another World in 1993. He’s since gone on to appear on other soaps and now, he’s scored his first Daytime Emmy nomination in the category of Outstanding Guest Performer in a Drama Series for his role as Jack Finnegan on The Bold and the Beautiful.
Ted King Talks Daytime Emmy Nomination
Soap Hub: How did you find out you were nominated and how does it feel to get a nod?
Ted King: I got a call from Brad Bell [B&B’s executive producer/head writer]. I think he may have been on vacation at the time, so I appreciate him taking the time to reach out. It’s always great to be recognized for what you do. A teacher told me years ago that [acting] is the only art form you can’t do by yourself. You have to have an audience. I’m always grateful when people see the work.
Soap Hub: How did you choose the scenes you selected for your reel?
Ted King: I can’t take credit. That’s all Eva Basler [B&B’s Vice President, Communications]. She really pushed for the submission and deserves the credit. She worked with Brad and the producers to select a number of scenes and I gave approval on what they had already selected.
Soap Hub: I imagine the reel includes scenes related to the truth about Finn’s paternity?
Ted King: It’s several scenes including those. It starts with Jack at Finn [Tanner Novlan] and Steffy’s [Jacqueline MacInnes Wood] wedding and the reveal of Sheila [Kimberlin Brown] and Jack claiming he was aware of who she is and then, we move into the discussion with Li [Naomi Matsuda] about the fact that he’s the biological father and then, his confrontations with Sheila, and it ends with Jack’s ‘mea culpa’ to Finn at Steffy and Finn’s home.
Soap Hub: You must have been pleased to see scene partners/co-stars Kimberlin [Brown, Sheila] and Naomi [Matsuda, Li] also nominated?
Ted King: Oh, yeah. All the nominees from the show…John McCook [Eric Forrester] is an amazing guy and wonderful actor. He was very warm and welcoming to me when I joined the show. All my scenes with Naomi and Kimberlin were a daily lesson.
Soap Hub: You, Naomi, and Tanner instantly created a sense that the Finnegans were a family. How do you create that believable bond?
Ted King: It starts with a lack of ego from all the actors. You go in completely open-minded with generosity and play off with one another. You rehearse. You can’t pull off any kind of chemistry without those factors. Tanner was amazing right from the beginning in making us feel comfortable with a cast he’d been with for a year. Everyone was. It’s a wonderful show to work on for that reason.

Soap Hub: This year, the Daytime Emmys broadcast is set to return to a live show in primetime on CBS. It’s exciting because it’s been a few years since the daytime world has gathered together like this.
Ted King: I’m more excited about my wife getting to pick out something nice. We haven’t gotten dressed up in years because of the pandemic. So, I’m really happy to get her out for a night out on the town and see her dressed up. I have no idea what I’m going to wear.
Soap Hub: The show’s returning to primetime and being live.
Ted King: I haven’t been involved for so long in that world, so it will take me back to the last time I attended the Daytime Emmys. I got locked out of it from the beginning.
Soap Hub: From…the ceremony?
Ted King: Yes. I was outside the theater [in Hollywood] and I got locked out of the beginning of the show. I came in right at the end of [Rick Springfield, ex-Noah, General Hospital, singing] Jessie’s Girl. A total throwback. He was still knocking it out of the park.
