Over the weekend, The Young and the Restless actor Richard Burgi revealed that he’d left the show. That news left us shocked and confused because it seems as if the soap made a “Locke-Ness Monster” mistake in letting the Ashland Locke actor go. However, news of a recast left us feeling hopeful for the character.

Young and the Restless Avoids A Mistake

Since Y&R spent so much time creating Ashland Locke, we’re glad to see that they recast with a daytime powerhouse like Guiding Light star Robert Newman. Sure, lots of Ashland’s storyline didn’t make sense, with his backstory seemingly changing every few weeks as new details came out. However, the fact that they spent time and money creating new sets for his and Victoria Newman’s (Amelia Heinle) big Italian wedding let us know they were heavily invested in this couple.

For once, Victoria has a marriage with the potential to help her become part of a new Genoa City power couple for the next generation. The storylines for Victoria and Ashland seem endless, especially after he recently received good news about his cancer treatments. So the fact that Ashland won’t be leaving is great news.

Here’s What Could Happen

Whenever Newman takes over as Ashland, we hope to see him and Victoria in a drama-filled business storyline. Because Y&R spoilers hint that Victoria will once again be at odds with her brother Adam Newman (Mark Grossman), we hope to see Ashland and Adam lock horns too. Since the show is keeping Ashland, we see plenty of real potential here (hopefully the writers will capitalize on it).

No matter what ends up happening, we can’t wait to see Victoria and Ashland work their way up to power couple status. With them helming Newman Locke, it seems the sky’s the limit. In the hands of skilled veteran actor Robert Newman, there is a great chance that Ashland Locke will continue on the path of being a memorable Young and the Restless character.
