With the Winter Olympics about to kick off, it made us flashback to 1999, and 1998 Olympic Women’s Figure Skating gold medalist Tara Lipinski joining the cast of The Young and the Restless.
Young and the Restless: Tell Me Whooooo Are You?
Lipinksi played Marnie Kowalski, gal pal of Megan Dennison (Ashley Jones). Megan’s dad, Keith, was dating Jill Foster Abbott (Jess Walton). Megan’s sister, Tricia (Sabryn Genet) married Ryan McNeil (Scott Reeves), the ex-husband of both Victoria Newman (Amelia Heinle now, Heather Tom then), and Nina Webster (Tricia Cast).
Megan was enamored with bad boy Tony Viscardi, who was killed (accidentally) by Megan’s sister. Megan married Tony on his deathbed, then left town. And Marnie…uhm…Marnie was…there.
Big Scene
Megan and Marnie periodically had coffee together and talked about boys. Marnie’s biggest moment came when a passerby told Marnie she looked a lot like that Olympic skater. You know, Tara Lipinski?
Oh, no, Marnie demurred. She could never be so wonderfully talented. Boy, wouldn’t it be cool if she was, though? Cue the fantasy sequence…as Tara Lipinksi, playing Marnie, daydreamed about being a skater who skated like…Tara Lipinski.
Young and the Restless: After the Ball
After such an amazing dramatic scene, Lipinski was invited to present at the 1999 Daytime Emmy Awards. She read her lines off a teleprompter alongside the late comedian Louie Anderson.
Marnie promptly disappeared from Genoa City. To be fair, so did the entire Dennison family. Lipinski presumably retired from her acting career, but she is still very visible in front of the camera, most notably during NBC’s coverage of the Olympics and the World Figure Skating Championships alongside Johnny Weir and Terry Gannon.
The skating world can have quite a bit of soap opera in it. Find out just how much in the very soapy Figure Skating Murder Mysteries!
The Young and the Restless (YR) airs weekdays on CBS. Check your local listings for airtimes. For more about what’s coming up in Genoa City, check out all the latest that’s been posted on The Young and the Restless spoilers, and for an in-depth look at the show’s history, click here.
