Fan-favorite Doug Davidson hasn’t appeared on The Young and the Restless as Paul Williams since last November. Here’s why that needs to change and the lawman needs to be back in Genoa City.
Soap fans love it when shows go on remote, invite celebrities to cameo on the show, and put on splashy events. However, viewers tune in daily to see their favorite characters. Doug Davidson’s Paul has been a Y&R mainstay for 43 years. As Genoa City’s chief of police, there are stories that call for Paul’s presence.
We were left scratching our heads as to why Rey Rosales (Jordi Vilasuso) accompanied Chelsea Lawson (Melissa Claire Egan) to go out of town since he’s the one she nearly killed in her efforts to frame Adam Newman (Mark Grossman). It’s a clear conflict of interest.
It would have made more sense to have had Paul show up, inform Rey that he wouldn’t be taking on this particular assignment, and then, Paul could have escorted Chelsea to see injured Anita Lawson (Catherine Bach — we miss you!) instead of Rey.
Across town, Abby Newman (Melissa Ordway), Nina Webster (Tricia Cast), and Tessa Porter (Cait Fairbanks) are fretting over Mariah Copeland’s (Camryn Grimes) disappearance. All three of these women have either direct or indirect experience with being taken captive. Should they really be taking Mariah’s text messages as gospel that she’s safe? While the police may want more time to go by before doing an official investigation, surely Nina could call upon her old pal — and former love interest — Paul to look into Mariah’s disappearance.
And there’s still another storyline that calls for Paul’s involvement. It takes a lot to shake Sutton Ames (Jack Landron), who clearly knows more about the late Richard’s death than he’s initially let on. Amanda Sinclair (Mishael Morgan), Imani Benedict (Leigh-Ann Rose), and Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) have all done a great job of trapping Sutton into making a confession. But will it hold up in court? Maybe Sutton getting a visit — officially or unofficially — from Paul could help secure an official indictment?
Most soaps have always had multiple doctors and lawyers on their canvases to help tell stories. Paul’s presence would only benefit and give authenticity to Y&R’s storylines. It’s clear that Davidson, a Daytime Emmy winner, still has a strong following by looking at his social media accounts. His fans want him back. The ball’s in Y&R’s court. Here’s hoping they hit it back.
