Mishael Morgan’s first stint on The Young and the Restless, as Hilary Curtis, saw the actress being forced to change characterizations on what felt like an almost daily basis.
Mishael Morgan Deserves Better
Hilary loves Neil Winters (Kristoff St. John)! Hilary loves Devon Hamilton (Bryton James)! She’s a scheming bitch! She’s misunderstood! She’s a friend to homeless waifs! She’s an enemy to one-time homeless waif Mariah Copeland (Camryn Grimes)! She wants a baby on her own! She wants a baby with Devon!
First Time Around
Of course, the worst waste of Mishael Morgan’s talent was when Hilary was killed off. At the time, she was literally the only African-American actress driving story on all of daytime. (Granted, by that point, daytime was down to only four shows but that doesn’t change the reality.) Morgan proved that she could handle anything the show threw at her, and still, Hilary was allowed to expire… only to be turned into a saint by a grieving Devon after she was gone.
Take Two On The Young And The Restless
The show realized its mistake and invited Morgan back to play Hilary’s heretofore unknown, long-lost twin, Amanda. They tried pairing her with Billy Abbott (Jason Thompson). They sparked. The show pulled the plug. They tried matching her with Nate Hastings (Sean Dominic). They sparked. The show pulled the plug.
Y&R put her back with Devon. They sparked. The show… diverted Amanda into a storyline about her biological family and a connection with Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) which ultimately went absolutely nowhere.
Where Are They Now?
These days on Y&R, the powerhouse actress has been relegated to nodding thoughtfully as Devon talks about his feelings for the baby he fathered for Abby Chancellor (Melissa Ordway) – and promised to stay away from.
“Hmm,” Amanda says. “How interesting. Tell me more… I see… And then what?”
We know the Daytime Emmy-nominated actress can do so much more. The Young and the Restless knows Mishael Morgan can do so much more. So what are they wasting this woman’s talent – for the second time?
