Eileen Davidson popped back up on The Young and the Restless as Ashley Abbott to meet her grandson, Dominic. However, it’s not enough. Y&R fans would like to see the Abbott heiress in Genoa City on a more regular basis.
Davidson took a break from Y&R back in 2018 so that she could spend more time with her family. “Time for more control over my day to day!” the Daytime Emmy-winner posted on Instagram at the time.
She’s graced Genoa City with her presence for some important moments in the show’s history since then. We’ve seen Ashley pay tribute to her late pal Neil Winters (Kristoff St. John) in an episode dedicated to both the character and his portrayer. Ashley was also on hand for her late mother Dina Mergeron’s (Marla Adams) final days.
Another family matter that brought Ashley back to our screens was when she met her great-nephew Harrison (Kellen Enriquez) earlier this year. For the record, according to her IMDB page, Davidson has logged about 20 episodes on Y&R in 2019; she made about 30 appearances in 2020. This year, she’s only popped up about a dozen times, however, the year has almost four full months left in it.
Davidson, who can also be seen in the Peacock limited series Days of our Lives: Beyond Salem as Kristen, has said that she prefers a lighter schedule. However, we can’t help but think that if Y&R came up with a great story, a new leading man, and whatever perks are still available in today’s world given the realities of COVID-19 and economics, Davidson could be convinced to appear more often on the top-rated serial.
Since her debut in 1984, Davidson’s been a fan favorite as Ashley. The Abbott chemist has been paired with Victor (Eric Braeden), Cole (J. Eddie Peck), the late Brad Carlton (Don Diamont), and more recently Ravi (Abhi Sinha). Ashley has been widowed twice; her late husbands were Blade (Michael Tylo) and Dr. Steven Lassiter (Rod Arrants).
While some viewers are diehard Ashley/Victor fans, some could also argue that Ashley has yet to meet the great love of her life. If Davidson were to return to the show on a more regular basis, Y&R could try pairing her with another love interest. Depending on casting and story, Ash could once again find herself being part of another supercouple.
Ashley’s needed back on a regular basis for multiple reasons. Not only do viewers want to see her in a storyline but the Abbotts are becoming scarce in Genoa City. Beth Maitland’s Traci (another character who needs to be on Y&R full-time) isn’t around regularly. With Kyle (Michael Mealor) in Italy and Dina (Marla Adams) having passed away, the Abbott mansion is once again in danger of becoming “Jack’s place.”
While a revisiting of Ashley and Victor’s romance is unlikely given that he and Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) are happily wed, the duo’s history will always resonate whenever they’re in a scene together. Victor and Ashley share a child, Abby (Melissa Ordway); the new mom is likely going to need her parents by her side as she embarks on motherhood – especially as there’s no sign of Chance returning anytime soon.
Time will tell if Eileen Davidson returns to the canvas on a more permanent basis. If and when it ever happens, both the actress and her character will be welcomed by the show’s fans with open arms.
